Round 5 Essendon v Geelong @ Windy Hill, 12pm Saturday May 13 2017

KJ, I am interested in why so many people see him as a defender. As I understand it he played both ends in TAC and was picked as AA CHF (just for fun Darce was picked on the flank next to him), but is there a particular reason you, or others, think that?

Just curious, but is there something in the way he plays? Have you seen him playing live and he is more influential as a defender? The only games I have seen are on TV, both VFL and AFL, and have only seen him playing a forward role.

I think he shows the type of footy brain and awareness to be something special. His fitness will come, gotta remember that last year was considered a write off by the team as he had injuries to get over and build up from. That he played at all was considered a bonus. From DJRs report it reads like he was OK, but just off his timing. I don’t think I have read anywhere that he is lazy (apart from some “informed” Blitzers) and he is doing everything required to get up to speed, including extras. Let’s hope that he does make it as there is so much to like.

Welcome to the “you slack ■■■■■■■, the game finished Saturday and you’re only submitting a report on Tuesday” VFL review.

**McNiece** – Actually saw his number a few times – neat foot skills, other than that as I still can’t readily identify him through the binoculars when he is facing me, so I’ll leave that to those better versed in all things McNiece.

Morgan – Can identify him now, but didn’t notice him that much. May make a deliberate effort to focus on him next game.

Francis – As others have mentioned, just tried to do WAY too much – dancing around players is great but when you’ve gotten a bit of space, best to give it off rather than attempting to dance around even more guys and get pinned. Was visibly severely frustrated at his own screw ups, so I’d back him in for a much improved game next week.

Redman – Unsighted by me at least, until he moved back. Showed a bit of composure in that role, which was encouraging.

Merrett – Backline. Will pay a bit more attention to what he is doing defensively next game I go to, but there was nothing overtly terrible. In a team with limited speed and vastly average foot skills, he offers a point of difference as he can break the lines and can kick.

Nick Hind – Kept a close eye on Hind after the state squad nomination. BOG to half time for me personally, 2nd best for the game. Half back for the first half and played an AFL standard game. Good foot skills, isn’t one paced and had plenty of composure to work through things if no options or poor options were prevalent. As mentioned by chris_64 he also turned out a highlight reel piece of play by baulking an opponent then hitting his target by foot. Second half, he was switched to playing as an inside mid largely, and I didn’t think he was as influential, though he had a few instances of reading taps correctly and using his pace to get sufficient space between his opponent to easily assess the options and hit a forward.

Clarke – Not a great game. In that odd situation of being a specialist inside mid who barely got any inside mid time, as they’re attempting to add some versatility by playing him as a forward flanker. On a couple of occasions, he ended up being the last kick into the 50 after taking a mark or getting a free, surprisingly nobody was around to call for the handball on either occasion, after turning over one by trying to pinpoint a target, he worked through things by just setting the ball up long –probably where he is going to be until the end of the year at least, sticking to the basics rather than trying anything overly precise by foot. His handballing which usually I find to be very clean, wasn’t to his usual standard. Will be a learning season for him, whilst he tries to adapts to different roles – I certainly don’t expect him to be near senior selection this season barring injuries.

Long – Wasn’t overly noticeable, which for a player with his attributes he needs to be. Year 3 on the rookie list, so time is running out.

T-Bell – OK. Personally I’ve seen him as a forward-ruck rather than the number one guy, so Draper’s game may help bring the best out of him. I wouldn’t be overly exuberant about his 3 goals as they all came after Geelong decided to experiment in the last term by switching their key defender Gardner and Timm House, who hasn’t played back before at VFL level…T-Bell was a big fan of that switch…still any confidence he can get as a forward is handy.

Draper – 3rd best. So this is where I’ll be potentially controversial and differ from the other reviewers, as whilst I thought he was very good, I’m not basking in a Draper afterglow like the others. I don’t rate Ryan Abbott as a ruck and Wylie Buzza is a tall guy who just pinch hits because he is tall, so there is that. He won plenty of hit-outs…maybe it was because I was sitting in a different stand and had a different angle on things…but either way, whilst we won plenty of clearances when he was rucking and he dominated the hit-outs, I just didn’t think he was this hit-out to advantage beast that he is being exalted as - that said he did have some impressive taps in there, I’d just dispute the 75% numbers DJR is tossing around. I was impressed by his contested marking around the ground, which I hope to see more of. Will face a much different prospect next week against Coburg’s Tom Goodwin, a tough, ultra-aggressive ruck who loves throwing his weight around.

Bird – BOG. Very surprised he didn’t play in Perth with Jobe missing and Myers for some reason largely playing as a back.

Stanton – Average. Worked his way into the game, but if he is anywhere near selection, it is more because of who he is than how he played.

Alex Marklew – First half he played down back, second half he was up forward. Looked nervous down back and his decision making and foot skills were on the average side, however he looked much better up forward.

Alex Boyse – Want to see more of him to see whether he has more tricks, but there might be something there – he is a very good overhead mark

James Ferry – Pushed around by Aaron Black in the first, but fared much better against Buzza. Hard one to assess as he is that in between size (who is forced to play taller) and has the history of knee issues. Reads the play well, finds plenty of it and generally disposes it OK. A solid presence down back who wasn’t overly tested in this game.

Hocking/Howlett – Didn’t think either noticeably pushed their cases for selection.

Gleeson – Wasn’t looking too hard at the defensive stuff today, but his kicking needs work. Too often he was either directly turning the ball over or kicking to the advantage of the Geelong player than our player.

Begley/Langford – Outside of thinking Langford could be a bit more defensively minded when the opponent he was standing next to at clearances (Lang) had just made the play, which led to him doing it again the very next occasion, I didn’t have anything positive or negative jotted down for either player. You’d love for Langford to play with even half of Francis’s intensity though.

He played 1 game in the TAC as a forward, had 9 shots at goal though.

Wouldn’t mind Nick Hind running off the half back in the seniors right now, will get even better as the season goes on.

Bird has to come in next week, Bird Bird Bird…Bird is the word!

Redman being moved back now? LOL

Mate I wasn’t at the game, but intensity ( describe it)

Frances a tackle and 11 possessions and that’s intensity

Langford 21 disposal 6 tackles ( 14, I read previously) and has left than half the intensity of big red.

again describe it

Imagine how much more than ten goals we would have won by if everyone wasn’t “meh”!

’Tis a better review of the good players than the comical one put up on the EFC site today though —guessing that author wasn’t actually at the game…

Just like you shouldn’t read into a player’s impact on a game based on overall disposal count, attempting to use stats to make an assessment on someone’s intensity during a game is even more fallible.

Have you seen Mitch Robinson play? His skills aren’t remotely pretty, but he is possibly the most intense player in the AFL, he hits contests like a battering ram and he plays like the type that would gnaw off his own arm and beat you over the head with it repeatedly, if that meant the difference between a premiership and not. He plays with his intensity meter constantly in the red-line, which is probably too intense as it leads to him going overboard.

Francis isn’t Robinson but he plays with his intensity lever maybe hovering around 60-70%, he hits contests at pace, he just can’t do it for more than 5 minutes at a time before he needs to recharge for the next 10. He a

Langford’s intensity meter is more like 5-10% and in an almost constant state of inertia. He plays very languidly, like he is so chillaxed that nothing affects him good, bad or otherwise. I don’t want him at Robinson level intense or even Francis’s level, but ticking up towards 25-30% would be fine, at worst the ability to play in bursts like someone just tased his undercarriage and he wants to take it out on the football.

Reckon coverage has left a fair bit to be desired.

Talk to the coaches and find out why.
Then stop with the pointless, and utterly misplaced, lol.

Coburg this Saturday, anyone know if they’re charging entry?

You reckon CB "LOL"ed when we put Zach Merrett at half back for a bit in the AFL?

The write-up in today’s Moonee Valley Leader is the only to mention Draper (with quote). Hi Tim Michell!

(http://leader.smedia.com.au/moonee-valley/, might not work on mobile)

I’d call them but I might get arrested?

I’m loling because of the fact Essendon is continuing the tradition of sticking everyone into different positions to where they were drafter for.

Definitely a comparable situation, well put. A young gun midfielder playing down back for a few mins, unheard of.

And in answer to your question, no.

Perhaps they can’t replicate what they were good at junior level at AFL level. Many reasons why that would be the case.

In Redmans case, a skinny HFF/wing type who has good endurance and fairly average pace isnt going to cut it as third tall, nor fitting into mix of speedy smaller players.

His clean ball use, decision making and overhead ability may see him better suited to HBF hence he is likely being trialled there.

Redman should be a forward, that’s what he was drafted for and what I thought he looked very promising last year to get a debut. I won’t make any more comments until I see that he is actually playing down back more often, but I hope he sticks it out up forward and not get thrown down back now because he can’'t get near it. Which is what is seems like and not some master plan from the EFC.

Last year half our side was out, and yes he had some moments in games where he looked good.

But you couldn’t honestly see him fitting into the way our fwd line is structuring up at present which is how it will stay for a number of years to come.

HF: Fantasia Daniher TIPPA
F: Green Hooker Stewart/Francis/LAV

The only player he’d be in mix against is LAV who is quicker, stronger bodied and more competitive in the contest and tackling wise. But even he is going to struggle to displace us playing 3 genuine talls IMO.

There is no place for him in our fwd line nor will there be anytime soon hence they looking at where else he may be able to excel at. HBF next spot.

It could be he transitions into a Goddard type utility who can play a variety of positions. And so he needs to learn his craft in defence as well.

Or they’re possibly trying to strengthen up his defensive game
