Already setting the competition alight with his versatile skillset, round 12 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee Nik Cox has praised the Bombers’ environment, saying he “couldn’t be happier” in the first year of his AFL career.

Essendon’s first selection (No.8 overall) in last year’s NAB AFL Draft, Cox made his debut in round one and has played every game since.

The 19-year-old revealed the Bombers kept him guessing in the lead-up to the draft.

“They kept their cards pretty close to their chest, but ‘Truck’ (senior coach Ben Rutten) rang me about two minutes before I got picked and I was speechless,” Cox said.

“But now, I couldn’t be happier (at Essendon). There’s a great bunch of people there, not only the players, but the coaches, the staff and everyone at the club. I just couldn’t be happier.

“There are times when I just don’t want to leave the club because it’s so enjoyable just being there. And sometimes you don’t want to cop the traffic on the way home, so I’ll just stick around."

Cox praised senior coach Ben Rutten’s early influence and the confidence he had instilled in the Northern Knights product.

“From the moment I got to the club, he’s (Rutten) had confidence in me and said there’s no reason why you can’t have an impact immediately,” he said.

“He just told me what I need to do in terms of the way we want to play on the wing, and he said just bring your natural strengths. He’s made me feel really comfortable out there. Truck is doing a great job with everyone. He’s making it a great place to be and a great place to learn.

"It’s definitely an exciting place to be because we a good mix of older and younger guys too – we’re learning so much off some of these older players.”

Cox has played mainly as a wingman this season with stints in the ruck, with the Bombers having seen in his junior football days that he can play anywhere on the ground.

The 202cm product said he was open to moving positions if required.

“I think versatility is one of my strengths and I’d like to keep that and keep building on that," he said.

"In my bottom-age year, I played centre half-back and also centre half-forward, and also at times ruck, so I think eventually I’d like to move into a key-position role. But wherever I need to be which best suits the team, I’m happy to just do that.”

Good boy Nic. Targets from other clubs take note!

I swear the media must get Cox and Reid mixed up at times. Wasn’t Reid the one listed at 202cm, while Nik was 199 or 200cm?

Cox has Grown!
Sure he was listed at 199-200cm when drafted

The horn makes him appear taller at times.

I know we want to get lots of games into them, but all 4 of the 18-20 year old players who played 8-12 games in the first half of the season need to be managed carefully in the second half.
Even players over 24 get “banged up” get niggles, lose weight over the season, and these are match hardened tough players. Nik Cox is no exception. We have several other players who can play on the wing, Like Shiel, Ham, Langford, Merret

You left out Cutler for some reason.

I think we can easily get 18- 20 games out of them.
Kosi got 20 games in his debut year.
Goddard played 18
Heppell managed 23
Merrett played 20

18 or so sounds about right for Cox. I am talking about resting for a couple of games in the second half.
Wing is probably not as tough as KPF, and I see Jones getting hammered in packs maybe 4-5 times in each game.

Jones loves to fly for the ball but the way we have structure our forward line, most of the time Jones is on the move creating space for the 1v1 deep inside 50.

I think Jones has a great ability to come from the side of contest and bring ball to our crumbers without getting the physical contact that other younger key forwards do eg Larked from North. he always seems too take ages recovering from each contest.

A few days ago I said Cox would be the modern day CHF prototype and I think that’s where he will end up his career being but in the mean time his first 50-70 games he will play a number of different roles to protect his body.

We’ll probably use the sub as our way of resting the young guys. Jones especially needs to be managed after his inury last year.

Dear Essendon,

Please don’t break this one.

I’d look at resting Jones as we come up against some of the battle hardened sides, like the Cats.

we really need our best players on the park so for the most part Jones and Cox stay in the side.

Bulldogs - Essendon could get Messy - but will help if they are already missing Dunkley and Treloar.

Both are being rested this week. No need for more rests unless sore.

you didn’t mention Melbourne…

I think I need a bowl of jelly snakes to eat watching Essendon games like Truck

Im not that concerned about melbourne, havent historically torn us to shreds.
Given they are the best in the comp we will likely struggle all over the ground, so need to reduce turnovers.

Draper got beaten last year by Gawn, he will be determined to put in a better effort.

Very much in the “we should have drafted Oliver” mould.

Different scenario but still moronic.

I certainly remember that @dingus is telling the truth. It may have been that others were spruiking it, rather than the Footy Show. I’d also heard that a very prominent player was five-bob-each-way. And in the late 2000’s, it was presumed that it was an Essendon player who was going to leave the closet.

The thing that really got me about that was Robbo asked the best thing about being an AFL footballer and Cox gave a lovely answer about how it’s really cool when kids recognise him and seeing them wearing his number, and how amazing it was for him as a little kid when he’d see AFL players. Just really wholesome. And Robbo just kind of goes “yeah, yeah, but I bet you’re drowning in it, right?” ■■■■ off Robbo.

Appreciate that.

I have at least 3.5 to 4 years before senility kicks in and, in any case, this is not the kind of thing one “makes up”.

Everyone gives Robbo crap behind his back, including players. He is legit a joke
