#13 Nik Cox - thru 2026 (Part 1)

You base this not liking contact off

his ability to physically tackle seasoned players?

Or

his tenacity when he goes into the ruck and competes as hard as he can?

Which one? Cos I think this guy actually doesn’t mind a bit of physicality and his body just needs to grow into his heart.

Sure. So the point is we are trialling every other player in all games and so you win the internet

Huh? Whats your point then? That we have reached a definitive conclusion with the position Cox plays?

My point is that last night was not a trial for Nic Cox on the wing.

Noticed several times at the match that he’d worked hard into space only to be ignored.

The reality is Nick has a long way to go as an AFL footballer. He has shown glimpses of good potential but needs to work very hard on building his strength and get some confidence back.

He plays round 1, and he plays on the wing.

He has massive talent, just needs experience

Taller players tend to take a bit longer to develop, nothing unusual there. We’ve seen some good early highlights from him last year; we need to continue providing him the resources he needs to build his strength, confidence and craft - not worried

does he though ? have the skills of a wingman ?

the general new age prototype of the wingman is running up and down the ground all day, bursting away with speed and hitting up targets (smith, hill etc).

He’s definitely had flashes of brillance no doubt, but it always seems to relate back relative to his height, ala if ham did some of the stuff cox has, most wouldn’t bat an eyelid.
it’s similar to laycock, or ryder or other similar players, what they do is always relative to their height.

that’s not to write him off, cos there’s obviously still alot there to work with and mould into him.
but WOB makes a good point, there hasn’t ever been a 200 cm superstar wingman ever before, so he’s got ahell of along way to go and going to have to continually fight the obvious battle against his height to skill ratio across his career.

Water is wet. >200 cm players drafted in the first round typically get 5 years on a list even when they’ve shown far less than Cox.

Agree
No one said he should be delisted
Just being realistic as to where he is at now

I don’t think he was ignored. Just too thin so they didn’t see him

This thread has come a long way since round 4 last year against Sydney where Cox, who was playing on a wing, dominated.

He’s had an interrupted pre-season and could have easily kicked 3 last night. He’s clearly rusty and will be better for the run.

Not overly worried. He will take a while to get confidence in himself. I think since the opposition have started to put time into him hes not finding it as easy. Hes a 200cm kid with prodigious athleticism and skills. It may take some time but he will get there.

I honestly don’t get any Blitzers getting impatient and declaring he needs to play KPP

what i dont get is the belief that he will find being a KPF any easier. He creates enough forward opportunities burning off his opponents and drifting forward anyhow.

I don’t see a traditional KPF role but think he has the height, athleticism and skill to play a 3rd tall forward role. Similar to Westhoff from Port years ago.

Think he could provide a great leading option with his running ability and he looks a pretty good mark.

Not totally against him developing on the wing but he does lack creativity with the ball and accumulation ability that I would normally associate with an outside mid.

I don’t think he’s a winger, there’s just this fascination with everyone cos he’s 200cm tall and it’s like “wow a 200cm midfielder”

I think he and Reid are bookends one day, what end each of them end up who knows but at a guess it’s Reid at CHB and Cox at CHF

It’s not impatience.

I personally just don’t think he is a wingman.

Yeah he does.

Moves well between arcs, maybe best in the team. He often provides an option forward or extra support back.

He is not an outside midfielder type but he offers a lot on the wing.
