#13 Nik Cox - thru 2026 (Part 1)

He was good yesterday

Another 6.5/10 sort of game, and there is nothing wrong with that. Did everything he needed to do pretty well. If that’s his base level and he has some really good games on top of that, then you won’t have too many complaints.

Made a couple of good spoils by just being alert that the ball wasn’t under control and that he could pry it out.

He’s building nicely. Probably incremental improvement across each of his last five AFL games. Can’t ask for more than that given the amount of footy he has missed.

He wasn’t good, he’s improved against his own standards.
He’s hand balling to other people’s feet is a huge issue.
He’s also so weak in the air when it’s body on body.
He’s put on no muscle in 4 seasons which is really holding him back…

I don’t see that.
I hope you’re a better judge than me.

I agree, it’s there, i think the break out stretch of games you’re talking about is late next year, just needs to keep playing and stay fit

Hes put on 20kg

You’d love to get your hands on big Cox and get him squatting and dead lifting day and night for 12 months.

We need Cox to get 22 solid games this year.

 :joy:

Cox has elite closing speed and reads the flight well with good timing in his spoiling.
I think once he starts backing himself to take the mark, he will become an influential interceptor but also have the skill set to lock down.
He also has the ability to chop out in the ruck as second ruckmen if required and spend time on a wing or half forward. Great to have this flexibility in our developing team, if injuries occur to other key position or ruckmen.

Keep pumping games into him, the only way.

We need to get Cox all big and vascular. Like a veiny trombone ready to sound.

Being big is good, but Cox needs to stand up more.

I agree re his spoiling. In the Hawthorn and Sydney games he did a couple of good defensive spoils running with the flight of the ball facing away from it, without giving away a free for front-on contact.

I don’t think we should be relying on him as a ruck though. Although I think all our 200cm+ players should have some level of ruck training, at least to the level where they can compete without giving away a free kick, I think Cox is too light right now. Now that the straight-arm fends are allowed again in the ruck contest, I think he’d be pushed off far too easily.

less edge, more explosiveness
