Speaking of Collingwood’s Cox, glad to see they’ve finally realised he’s a spud and he can’t get a game. Though he’s on astonishingly good money for someone who can’t actually play Aussie Rules other than a couple of half decent marks each game
100%. Everyone is obsessed with tall blokes playing a KPP or ruck role, but it’s your midfielders who win you games. And imagine a 200cm wingman who can drift forward and take marks over his 180cm opponent.
Richmond tried for his entire career to turn Richo into a key forward and he wasn’t. Then they unleashed him on the wing late in his career, 30+ years of age and slowing down, and he nearly won a Brownlow there.
I know you’re saying this partly tongue in cheek… but plenty of similar comments were written about Draper, JoeDan etc.
What about we build a team around a solid gameplan and culture instead, just for a change… instead of Hail Mary hopes on one or two players becoming superstars?
The secret to all top players. Confidence and feeling that you belong on the ground with your team mates. Watch as some of our newbies such as 2MP , Jones , Zerk and even Phillips gain there mojo , it will be wunderbar.
What I loved about Cox on the weekend, was that moment in the last where Collingwood had created a fast break type situation at a time where another goal to them might break us, they go long to a one on one or two in two and the ball goes to the ground. And there to hoover it up and pick the correct option was Cox. At the speed the ball had travelled from our half forward line he had no right to be there. And to get there, be clean and calm and pick a good option under the heat was so important, and something that we have not had a lot of at critical times over the last few years.
This kid can be absolutely anything… he’s a gun… it’s his 6th game and showing some promise. Playing on the big stage , with a massive crowd behind and against him. Unbelievable!!
