#13 Nik Cox - thru 2026 (Part 2)

Kinda sounds like Mark Blicavs who, similar to Holmes, has flourished in a good system.

might be out of our hands.

He’s done. You won’t get a finding from an AFL appointed panel clearing him to return.

The fear of future litigation alone would prevent it.

He’s much maligned on here but regardless of what you think of him it’s a terrible reality for him.

He has to give up on his dream and deal with the very real medical consequences.

Coxy.

So if they retire him will we be compensated with a pick?

Yeh nah

Makes sense unicorns are irreplaceable

I don’t know how anyone can’t just think ā€œpoor bloody kidā€. He certainly had some attributes, hopefully these concussions don’t cause him any permanent issues. You just have to read the story on Paul Van der Haar to realise how much damage was caused to these young men, before we truly understood duty of care.

Does he get any sort of worker’s compensation?

I love it when people use the defence of he wasn’t rated pre-draft as an excuse.

Who cares if the unpaid, non-recruiters in group think land did or didn’t rate someone. I’d be aiming for our paid recruiters to be better than them.

I don’t personally care we missed Holmes specifically, but you do need to find players like this at times, that others haven’t noticed, to be successful recruiters. Geelong have a habit of it.

Would have been the perfect question for Alex our HR guru in Adelaide but he chose a stoopid pathway again.
As a starting point, the AFL will assist with on going medical treatment in the short term. Essendon will negotiate a retirement package and compensation for a direct injury will be the hard bit likely determined in a Court at some level.

We did pick up Martin that no other club rated. He’s probably in our top 5. It’s more you have to nail your top picks, without looking into it I’d say every club has some great successes mid to late in the draft.

Martin was a great pick. Same with durham. Insane where they came from.

You need success with enough of both the late picks, and the early picks. And our list where it is at, clearly we haven’t had enough great picks. We have definitely been below par with our early picks, no doubt. However, Carlton as an example have an excellent top end from their early picks, so are obviously struggling with their late picks.

Hopefully Rosa lifts the standard for us across the board.

Martin and Durham are so far outside the norm it’s nuts. Complete outliers, we could got 20 years and not get another SSP or MSD pick like they. Complete flukes.

Geelongs list boss is the best in the business.

Doesnt mean we failed on the 2020 draft. The fact we got Zac Reid at 10 when Hawthorn, Sydney, North and the Suns all passed is a win.

Holmes wasn’t taken until the end of the first round meaning he was passed over by a lot of clubs with good recruitment teams.

I never said we failed the 2020 draft. I didn’t comment on it at all in fact.

I merely said, when people throw out the line of where someone was rated publically pre-draft as some sort of justification for failing or missing a pick, it is ridiculous.

You don’t measure your recruiters output against the views of the less informed general public, it is craziness. We should, however, measure it against the best in the business, since I hope that is what we strive to be after all.

I think with Geelong they target footballers from the south west of Victoria/border of SA.

Thats why those footballers have success. They are playing in their own backyard. Probably most of the list grew up following Geelong or half their mates or family did as well.

It’s a good environment for them.
