Injury news: Nik Cox update
Utility to miss remainder of 2025 at recommendation of AFL Concussion Panel.
I don’t think he ever plays again.
Seems like the best case scenario for him at this point is doing a Paddy McCartin, and that’s not a very good scenario at all.
Ham sat on the footy so long it bloody hatched
Deer in the headlights
He will be back looking like a stick insect.
Will get an innocuous knock to the head and that will be that.
We got him because he was runner-up to Sam Walsh in his club’s B & F.
I cant see how Cox overcomes the risk of concussion.
He will be so reluctant to take contact that he’ll be counter-productive on field.
I suspect that the club is still considering whether to pay out the last year of his contract and delist him. Probably just waiting to see how trade week concludes.
The other thing potentially influencing the situation is whether Cox’s circumstances have met the triggers for insurance claims relating to losing his job via concussions, ie - workplace injury.
Further proof that footy clubs do dumb ■■■■ all the time
I cant see how Cox overcomes the risk of concussion.
You don’t spend a year on the sidelines and come back from this.
His career is done
Don’t know if Nik wearing a rugby like cap might help?
Some on here I recall stated those can be counter productive in terms of protecting a skull and concussions. I’m just not sure but if it helps though, then why not..
It’d be great if he somehow returned and made an impact like he did back in 2021. What a secret weapon if so. I just think he was a bit overcoached. He was never a KPD and it was Dunstall or King from memory summarily dismissing Nik as a defender during a game. Such talk would whack any young player’s confidence.
To get the best out of Nik, I reckon he’s the type to let go and play without too many rules. Start as a winger (remember he did have a tank) and let him float forward as he has a eye for a goal. Even a poacher’s type. No further back than a HBF and only for helping out.
Fingers crosed for this young Bomber.
Yes the Dockers got some reasonable footy out of Kepler in that sort of role. Cox is a creator, if he’s anything.
Maybe - maybe - a very rebound-focussed tall back. But not a key back.
Cox’s best positions have been obvious from day one. It is as a link up player. Either as a winger or a HF in the Tom Lynch (Ade) role. This utilizes his big engine, elite kicking and height. On the wing he’ll be slightly disadvantaged for speed but you hope his offensive and defensive marking outweigh that. And he wasn’t slow. His agility for a 200cm player was crazy good.
This is the position a number of draft watchers suggested pre-draft. It is where he first played under Rutten who was there when we decided who to draft first. It is only Scott who temporarily tried him elsewhere (backline) to no effect.
I still maintain Cox was a very good selection. He looked like he would become a real weapon in 2021. Injuries which were not foreseeable have crippled him.
Don’t know if Nik wearing a rugby like cap might help?
It won’t.
Doesn’t reduce the acceleration forces in the neck/head which are what cause concussions.
We cooked this guy in his first couple of seasons.
Playing him wing and expecting him to run all day week in week out against mature opponents.
His body was not ready for AFL.
Got his fifty game plaque tonight despite not playing at all this year
How many games has he played?
Let me tell YOU about Nik Cox. I’m an expert! No muscle, no Nik! My empathetic side says we should delist him due to his concussion issues! ![]()
Talented new player for 2026.
Anyone in the know about whether he copped significant head knocks or is he just one of those poor buggers who is susceptible to it?
I believe the AFL concussion team are going to provide a recommendation on his future in October or November? Too late for draft anyway but we could pick up a SSP
Recommendation already provided wasn’t it? Free to resume next year.

We are on the road doing the same with N Caddy 19 year-old trying to carry the forward line getting roughed up by all the seasoned strong bodied defenders. I am not surprised he already has groin injuries apparently.
There was another checkpoint in November I believe but the club wanted an answer from the concussion review board prior to the trade period given our list spot squeeze.
