You got to wonder if our salary cap is bursting at the seams.
Draper, Tippa, Redman, D. Clarke, Francis all of out of contract and their price rising each week.
Parish just siged, Shiel, Smith, Saad, Stringer all coming on board in the past 2 years.
Joe out of contract next year.
Do we just bite the bullet and trade raz for a top 10 pick at season’s end given that I’m almost certain that Adelaide would be keen given their circumstances and make sure we secure all of the above players to long term deals?
This is just speculation coz I don’t know how our books are looking
Not at all. We’ve had no success for 100 years and there is no way a mediocre team is being paid $m’s and over their MV. We take time to negotiate contracts because we don’t throw $$$s away. We have the cap space to land another biggie, but we don’t have draft picks to trade for them eg Jack Martin during last year’s trade bonanza.
Nope, we keep him.
I don’t doubt that cap room is tight but not at bursting point like many think. We will lose a few players off our list at seasons end if I’d bet all the banned players were on a heavily front loaded contract which would all be running down. All good teams lose a player or two due to cap squeeze or opportunity so it wouldn’t surprise me if a Laverde/Hartley/Ridley for example were looking elsewhere
I also think Shiel taking less to be here might get everybody to hold back and spread the $ around for success. They are all young enough they can buckle down for 5 years and then run off to massive contract for the latter part of their career.
you also have to pay a certain percentage of the top cap anyway isn’t it ?
it used to be 92.5 %
which i roughly worked out a few years ago eqauted to if you paid that 92.5 it was in the ball park of having 750 thousand to spare a year give or take.
so pretty much every teams salary cap is technically almost at breaking point every year, which is why the war chest crap that gets thrown around in our sport is silly to me.
soccer teams, american sports teams they have war chests that they throw money at people willy nilly.
in the afl, with a cap however you still have a limited amount of money you can just throw at players, without taking from somoene else.
all comes down to who they rate the most and who they are willing to keep, but as you say i think a couple of players of mid range will be leaving at years end
I could see Hartley leaving for opportunity, there are a few clubs in desperate need of KPDs at the moment and he’ll have to wait until both Hurley and Hooker to go before getting his shot at being best 22.
Laverde and Ridley are both contracted so if they were to leave we would be the ones initiating the trade - I’d be surprised if we were to push either of them tbh. If Laverde he isn’t in the starting forward 6/7 he’d be next in, especially for Brown/Stringer or that pseudo tall/medium role/s.
Ridley I think is being groomed to replace Zaharakis, based on some of the coaches comments indicating they want him to be more damaging through the middle and him spending more time running through there this season.
Langford is one I could see requesting a trade, and us being amenable, as there doesn’t seem to be a clear path for him to break into the starting 22. At the moment he is relying on injuries to get games and with the progression of Dylan Clarke as that inside midfielder, that Kyle thinks he could become, he might feel like he is being pushed aside.
Just a quick look at our uncontracted list, aside from the rookies and probable delistings, only Hartley and Houlahan are the guys who’d unlikely be playing many games next year. Francis, Draper, Walla, Guelfi, Clarke, Redman, Brown would think they are a very good chance at being best 22 next year.
