I assume Carlton were interested in Langford but not in Laverde, and Sydney's pick wasn't live. So we take Langford first knowing Laverde will get through to us anyway.
Carlton was very much into Langford, especially in just losing Waite. They would has chosen him over Boekhurst so Dodoro got in first risking us not getting Laverde but still panned out that way.
Just know that somehow in some way, we farked carlton.

Carlton wanted Langford. Laverde was never in there calculations.
even though we rated Laverde better we knew if we picked him at 17 Carlton would pounce on Langford.
Brave move. But it paid off.
Sometimes it's better to know what your opposition wants!

ESSENDON is confident the Paddy Ryder trade can help the club achieve short and long-term success after nabbing two tall excitement machines last night.
The Bombers secured 190cm mobile forward Kyle Langford (No.17) and 189cm X-factor midfielder Jayden Laverde (No. 20) to bolster the club‘s outside running and marking options.
It meant the Ryder trade to Port Adelaide effectively netted the Bombers former Western Bulldog Adam Cooney and Langford.
List chief Adrian Dodoro said the club rated Langford the 12th best player in the draft and Laverde eighth, but took them in the opposite order to combat Carlton‘s plans at No. 19.
“We wanted to get running height into our midfield and we saw two guys who have got the potential to be, without giving them labels, we think Langford has a bit of Nat Fyfe in him,†Dodoro said.
“He can mark overhead, we can isolate him forward, play him onball. He is a very exciting player and so is Jayden.â€
Essendon coach James Hird said he was pleased with the outcome of the Ryder deal.
“When Paddy left we had to give the current list an opportunity to be successful and we looked at players who would compliment our list and add experience,†he said.
“But having two picks inside 20 had to be about the future.â€
Laverde‘s height, marking strength and versatility prompted one recruiter this week to dub him “a better version of Marcus Bontempelliâ€.
“I can certainly see the comparisons in terms of growth. He can be anything if he put his mind to it,†Dodoro said.

For those who didn't follow the draft that closely then this is all you have to know.
Just how highly rated these kids are and where we got them is such a terrific result for our club.
Freak talents these kids and players who have the attributes and attitude to become stars.

Dodoro deserves so much credit for that ballsy move. Two wonderful talents, no go home factor, they have grown up loving the club and can thank one of the most audacious moves in recent draft history. When you factor in that it was on the back of draft sanctions and that failure would have meant not only missing out on the more fancied player but that Laverde's replacement would have most likely been a pale facsimile of what we ended up with - just unbelievable.
Disco and co deserve a pay rise.
