At the game, whenever we were 60 or so out, I looked for where laverde was each time. Quite a few times he would start right in the goal square or in a deep pocket and charge to any open space he can see. Often he would make a 20-30m lead to the middle of the 50m rather than the pockets. I think many forwards, including joe should learn from this. Every single time we have the ball coming down the wing and we get to 70m out, Joe and Brown double back and then point their hands to where they want the kick to land. Two bad things about that is they both point to the pocket or to an angle. This obviously makes it harder to kick goals. Secondly they barely lead.. they wait in a pack and want the ball a good 15m ahead of them so they can have a good run and jump at it. I know that is exactly how joe likes to take his marks but what they should be doing is making single leads to dangerous positions rather than wanting to take a pack mark in the pocket. It makes it easy for defenders to get to the contest becuase the ball is in the air for a long time and often gets punched over the boundary. Also not enough little guys make genuine leads from the goal square.. i'm not only referring to essendon just the whole league in general. It almost seems as though someone that isn't a key forward see there job as making dummy leads for the big forwards to lead into the space or they hang around the big forwards and get to their feet for a crumbing goal. I know both of those strategies are fine and the coaches love that. But I really think as whole, there are much less one out leads at full pace. Some forwards specialise in it like josh kennedy for example. Laverde does this perfectly too, he leads to one spot at full pace. On top of all this, sometimes it seems whoever has the ball does not want to take the risk of kicking a short 15-20 kick to a leading player if they only have 1 or 2 meters on their opponent. I know some players are better kicks than others and have confidence in what they can do, but anyone at AFL level should be able to hit a leading target 20m away. Long post but these are my views on the way modern footy is played.

Dude - learn to paragraph.

Grammar is the least of my worries dude

Daft americanisms should be the most. You should both be ashamed and hung for treason

Maybe hanged as well. Not having sneaked a peek, can’t tell you how hung he is.

Looks like a footballer.

His first second thrid and fourth efforts in any given contest are phenomenal. He is a guy desperate to do something every time the ball gets near him. They must love him around the club if that is his attitude, specially woosha

It was a pretty good post though. Totally agree with the points re: Lav’s positioning and ability to lose his opponent.

BTW, paragraph is not a verb. Don’t be the grammar police unless you know some grammar.

Not the greatest of angles, but it was all the AFL highlights package had:

Could make it a bit smoother but not sure Riolio would be too happy with me taking up all the bandwidth.

Love the little extra shove after the tackle. That’s the kind of attitude that will take the team forward. Parish has it also.

Love it. He has that mongrel about him and that attribute can be the difference between good and great. I remember in one of his draft highlights he takes a screamer over a block and then stands over him giving it to him. Pretty sure he kicked the goal as well. As you say parish has it too and these are the types of guys who will drag you over the line instead of standing around waiting for someone else to do it.

Love the way Zerrett and Parish will dig into the player who just bumped over one of our players

$23 for first goal too thank you very much.

Can’t believe it didn’t go the other way. Obviously too aggressive, and his facial expression wasn’t nice.

(So aggressive that the football went into the crowd and back onto the ground in a millisecond.)

Edit: β– β– β– β–  that is good. Just watched it another 68 times.

Lav will hav (unintentional typo but it will stay) the bigger, more dynamic, moments. Langford will have more moments, more regularly.

Fanta, Lav and Parish all love giving it to opposition defenders.
Zerrett too. Loves rubbing his opponent's head into the turf after he's run them down.

Fanta, Lav and Parish all love giving it to opposition defenders.

Plays with true Passion. Just watched the β€˜all the goals’ video on the club website. Gets right around every goal scorer all day. Gave that huge serve to Dempster after the run down. Love him.

Jake Stringer role.

β€œThe Package”

I got ridiculed for comparing Laverde to Stringer early last year but I really do see a comparison there, I think the laverde and langford combo could be similar to Bonts and Stringer. Both can play serious midfield minutes but also compete up forward and have great endurance.

Laverde is also the type of player that may only need to touch it 10-15 times but still has a direct impact on the game. Hasn’t had a good run with injury but has made a huge difference to our forwardline when he is up there. Leads well, marks well and most importantly puts a heap of defensive pressure on. When we had tippa, laverde and fanta all buzzing around it put stk defenders under pressure and hence created a lot of turnovers.

Plays arrogant.

Like.

What I loved about the tackle was the fact that his last few steps seemed a little quicker. Like he lured his prey into a false sense of security.

It reminded me of Michael Bevan running between the wickets and always making fielders throwing to his end even though they had no chance.

Mad skills!

You do know that people β€œaccelerate” as they run over 20-30m yeh?

Perhaps he was just letting him run to his preferred option for a shot on goal?
