#19 - Kayle Gerreyn

Our WAFL :gem: !

The WA connection is paying off.

Looks great.

Happy with the selection. I can’t wipe the Gerreyn off my face.

He’s a Cardie to us old time rusted on West Perth supporters.

Joins an elite group that have represented both of these two great clubs like Billy Duckworth, Darren Berwick and…erm, um…Kepler Bradley.

According to Kayle himself his last name is pronounced as Jerr-ain

Just checked those highlights, ready made footballer from his frame which is refreshing. He also seems to move very well. This could turn out to be a good pick. Everyone was sold on key forwards and ignored the ruck/forward by the look of it, maybe we got a good slider.

Are you describing a new Bellchambers?

He’s French?!!

Oh la la

Shifter got it right then

How West Coast didn’t grab this kid is beyond me.

Perhaps we’re stashing him as part of the Reid trade.

Absolutely this, could save us an extra 1st rounder in a trade if he kicks off.

For all the Shannahan talk, no one drafted him.

Except for west coast

That’s pretty insane.

He was talked up as high as mid 20s.

Oh.

I’ll wait until BT mispronounces it and insists he’s correct. What would the kid.himself know.

He’s certainly not a twig and moves extremely well for a kid that doesn’t have AFL fitness as yet. Someone mentioned Ryder in how he moves and covers the ground and I can see that a little bit.

AFL Draft: Kayle Gerreyn on the family pain and childhood dream fueling his AFL charge

It’s the wait that kills you, according to West Australian draft prospect Kayle Gerreyn.

The West Perth forward is potentially just a week away from achieving a lifelong dream.

After putting everything into his 2024 season the 18-year-old admits there’s been plenty of sleepless nights leading up to the AFL Draft.

ā€œIt’s definitely a nerve-wracking experience, when it’s been your life all year and then it’s taken away it’s difficult to find that balance but I’ve just been focusing on my body and mind to make sure I’m right to go.ā€

ā€œThe uncertainty is definitely frustrating but I’m pretty lucky to have the support around me to get me through but at the same time keep that balance and mind away from footy,ā€ he said.

It’s not the first time the Gerreyn household has had to endure a nervous wait with his father Chris drafted to Hawthorn at pick 44 in 1992.

However, Chris would never play a game being delisted just a year later with Kayle revealing his father’s pain has provided plenty of motivation to ensure he will not waste the opportunity should it come his way.

Chris Gerreyn (left) knows what the Draft experience is like. Yes

ā€œIt was more regret on what he didn’t do, that’s where all his advice comes from, he was on the other end of the scale where he didn’t last all that long so for him he wants the best for me and make sure I don’t go through the same thing,ā€ he said.

ā€œI cannot thank him enough for that.ā€

Gerreyn had an indifferent start to the season before a breakout performance at the U18 Nationals Championships, kicking three goals in a win over South Australia, put him firmly on the radar of scouts.

ā€œYou want to have that self-confidence and belief, going over that first game against Allie was a bit of a struggle and the doubts run through your minds,ā€ he said.

ā€œBut that second game was good to realise I can match it with these guys and the top.

ā€œI thought my year was pretty solid I felt like at the start I fluctuated which was frustrating but coming back from the state championships my focus was to really enjoy the last part of the year and I feel like from where I started to now is really good.ā€

Kayle Gerreyn hopes his agility can set him apart.

At 199cm Gerreyn is the tallest WA prospect in this year’s crop but believes his ability to play across all three lines and hit the scoreboard are his main points of difference.

ā€œMy versatility is the man thing at the moment to play on all three lines but getting on the scoreboard and being that extra mid in the ruck is probably what separates me,ā€ he said.

ā€œI feel like I’d love to play my footy as a ruckman but if I was to impact at the next level with my size it will be mostly up forward and hitting the scoreboard.

A strong performance at the national combine, where he finished sixth in the ability test, only saw his stocks rise further though he admits he has been doing his best to block out the noise.

ā€œI try and stay away from the chatter about myself there’s so much that can change in a week and father sons and NGA’s it could be anything,ā€ he said.

Kayle Gerreyn hopes his versatility can be the difference.

ā€œI was pretty happy with what I showed but at the same time there are so many others who did things better than me, I think it’s a good thing but you never know.

ā€œThe combine was a great experience to go head to head with the best of the best, I feel like us WA boys tested really well which is probably unexpected from everyone else, so it was a great experience for everyone.ā€

Gerreyn revealed around 15 clubs have been in contact with him and while he says he will be happy to get an opportunity no matter where it is, playing for the club he’s supported since a child would be a dream come true.

ā€œHawthorn is definitely top of the list I’d love to live my dream with the team I supported and the way they’re going at the moment with such a young group is great,ā€ he said.

ā€œIt’s been a dream of mine forever so if I’m lucky enough to get the opportunity to make the most of it no matter where I go.

ā€œBut if I’m lucky enough I’d love to be at Hok-ball and flag-Hok.ā€

Question is whether he is good because he is the big kid against the smaller kids or he’s just good no matter what.

Looks like a great prospect.

And probably taken at the point in the draft where we should have taken Nik Cox(also tall and versatile - but needs to be a patient project).

Hope hes another point of difference.
