Essendon’s next premiership cup is waiting at the end of a rainbow!

So we just hand over the excess to Draper because we can? Just because we have the cap space now and will have the cap space in the future doesn’t mean we just spend it. Once you’ve committed that money you can’t take it back.

Just hypothetically (go with me here!!!) imagine that next year we miraculously improve and then the year after that we’re in a prelim final but you’ve now maxed you cap on players like Draper, Ridley and Parish who spent most of that time in rehab. Now your Caddy’s and Kako’s who got you to that prelim come knocking at your door what are you going to do then? Play 4D chess with your cap?!!

You really think that an AFL list management team can’t manage the basic machinations of the salary cap and players being paid?

I think that it’s very possible that a new list management team could have made an error and not noticed that Draper’s salary was outside of the RFA limit.

Probably mismanaged when Dodoro was in charge. The way he threw money around on mediocrity was amazing.

Also, Collingwood famously mis-managed the cap which meant Grundy and Treloar had to leave. But it ended up being the best thing for them.

Hopefully he will accept a pay cut so we can pay Alywn Davey Junior 6 mill over 3 years.

haha surely not, least these will be a little bit higher and they can’t blame covid again.

I guess it’s possible. Opening a spreadsheet, sorting by “guaranteed payments” high to low, and counting to 9 seems pretty easy though.

I actually view Draper’s departure as a culture improver. Like Stringer, Draper’s career has embodied everything wrong with the playing group - injury prone, inconsistent and not professional enough.

Sure Drapes is a great bloke, but where is the performance to back it up? It’s funny that just like Jake, Draper is his fittest in a contract year

And Parish and McGrath and Redman and Ridley.

Re fittest at contract yr

Ohhhh big man with his excel skills. I had to lie about mine in my resume like a good bloke

Agree with your assessment but 25% of 44 would mean he moved from 11th to 12th, no?

Or just frontload it like we did with McKay, Langers & Ridley. Also has the added benefit of adding more air in the cap later down the track which lets us go buy a gun when the time comes.

Proficient in Excel was absolutely the biggest lie I ever put on my resume.

My mail has changed on Draper. Apparently Brisbane upped their offer and he is likely gone. Seems like the club is playing the strategy of increasing pay in the event he leaves to get better compo as a few Blitzers have hoped for and pointed out.

Will be interesting from here. I know the injury has huge potential implications for him but I love the guy and he’s exciting. I feel there is very little joy in following this club at the minute.

Yeah I feel the same. It’s a bit like Joe all over again.

Can’t really fault the guy for going to a flag contender and getting paid more to do so. Will win a flag live it up from there

But it’ll be funny to see the reactions from the ‘no good’ crowd when he’s dominating for one of the best sides in the comp
