#20 Jacob Townsend - donning the correct sash

Offical.

Premiership player Jacob Townsend has today officially joined the Bombers after the former Tiger signed with the club during the AFL pre-season supplemental selection period.

Townsend arrives at The Hangar with 48 AFL games across two clubs, playing 28 for Greater Western Sydney and 20 for Richmond, including the 2017 premiership.

The 26-year-old starred in the Tigers’ 2017 finals campaign, kicking five goals – two in the Grand Final.

In the same year, he was awarded the JJ. Liston Trophy as the best and fairest player in the VFL.

Townsend - a childhood Essendon supporter - began his AFL journey in 2010, signing with the Giants while he was still in high school under the club’s zoning concessions. He officially joined the Giants in 2012 before being traded to Richmond in 2016.

General manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro said Townsend would provide the Bombers with versatility.

“Jacob will provide us with a really hard edge. He is a player that is really combative, and we felt that we needed these attributes in our line-up,” Dodoro said.

“Jacob has the ability to apply pressure in our forward line, but we are also confident that he can play inside as a big-bodied midfielder.

“The focus for us was to find experienced players during this period and we believe Jacob can play a great role and have an instant impact at the club.”

To be eligible to be selected in the AFL pre-season supplemental selection period, a player must have previously nominated for the national draft or previously been on the list of a club.

Townsend will begin training with the Bombers on Thursday, December 5.

King of the understatement is our Dodz.

But for Townsend, 26, the opportunity is perfect.

After playing mostly as a makeshift key forward at Punt Rd, the Leeton product is relishing the idea of rolling the sleeves up back in the centre square in red and black.

“When I caught up with the coaches and (list boss) Adrian (Dodoro) they said they saw me playing as an inside mid – to try and win the footy and help the outside players,” he said.

“I rather that inside midfield role. I like getting in there first and using my physicality to try and win the ball or tackle and turn it over.

“Obviously there are some very good midfielders here at Essendon, but I will back myself to play AFL games.

“I am not here to be a bit of a depth player. I am sort of over that, at the moment.

“I have been doing that for the past five or six years, so I think can play that (senior on-ball) role.”

It’s certainly become a lot more prevalent since the SAGA.

No prizes for working out why.

I am seeing a pattern emerging here. The new coaching regime wants tough, no compromise players.
Well we already had Smith, who is the archetype of a hard nut and we have recruited about 3 more.
But if the team is going to harden up, some of these players will need to actually displace established best 22 players.

Or get others to lift to their level of it through FOMO.

I’m a bit confused by this comment BSD. Are you saying more kids follow us since the saga? I know Humbertiño became more passionate the angrier I got with ASADA and co, but that does tend to run against the generally accepted narrative.

EDIT: oh yeah, and a big welcome to Jacob T.

Reckon we will recruit/draft more hard nuts next season.

Blokes like Langford better watch their backs sick of us being a soft side.
