Probably only of interest to @Blummers32 given he finds use for the spreadsheet and stat nerds like @TrevorBix and @redbull , but here are the midfield frequency stats from the 4 Channel 7 games from Rd 1.
The goal is to get a minimum of 9 games of data for each team over the season (roughly 3 for every third of the season) + finals, which with a few exceptions was achieved last year. Sometimes I had much more than that - I had 18 games of data IIRC for the Dogs by season's end.
These stats are used to assist in deciding the proposed changes to positions at season's end. The basic idea is to take note of all 5 starting mids + ruck for every bounce, not a perfect solution to decide midfield time, but it is the easiest to differentiate between mids and others as well as being useful to see where other typical midfielders might be playing via quick kicks out of the centre. I run with the theory that each team has 6 core mids, with the rest being rotating forward or back flankers - in other words place in the top 6 and you're considered to be a mid for that game. Two years worth of overwhelmingly placing in the top 6 mids = player gets nominated to be a pure mid.
Ruck stats I've only been keeping since Round 9 of last year as it seemed a natural extension of what I was already doing. For the curious this is where the nomination of Josh Bruce & Jack Watts as FRs came from - and they both played as the 2nd ruck again in Round 1. Consistently heavy ruck loads would lead to current FRs playing as #1 rucks being nominated to lose their forward status, conversely a regular 50/50 or 60/40 split between rucks would lead to a pure R being nominated to gain forward status.
For brevity's sake I'll just list those with 5 or more appearances, as the Dogs used 11 players within the first term alone.
33 - Ed Curnow (19 wing, 14 inside)
29 - Bryce Gibbs (all inside)
29 - Patrick Cripps (inside)
29 - Marc Murphy (inside)
19 - Samo Petrevski-Seton (11 inside, 8 wing)
16 - Dale Thomas (wing)
14 - Billie Smedts (wing)
9 - Dennis Armfield (wing)
6 - Kade Simpson (wing)
31 - Matthew Kreuzer (82%)
7 - Levi Casboult (18%)
Suspect it might be a fitness issue, but Petrevski-Seton played inside for the first half and outside for the 2nd. Didn't actually watch this game just recorded the stats, so I'm not 100% where Smedts mainly played but based on their squad breakdown I suspect it would've been forward. Shall investigate in future rounds in any case.
28 - Shaun Grigg (21 wing, 7 inside)
27 - Dustin Martin (inside)
26 - Dion Prestia (25 inside, 1 wing)
25 - Trent Cotchin (24 inside, 1 wing)
18 - Josh Caddy (inside)
17 - Shane Edwards (15 wing, 2 inside)
16 - Bachar Houli (wing)
13 - Nick Vlastuin (inside)
10 - Kayden McIntosh (wing)
6 - Brandon Ellis (wing)
32 - Toby Nankervis (84%)
6 - Ben Griffiths (16%)
Equal most midfield appearances I've recorded for Vlastuin. Very clear that Shane Edwards has had his inside time swallowed up by the recruitment of Prestia & Caddy - last season's final numbers were similar but the inside/outside mix was the reverse. Houli started in his 2016 end of season role off a wing before swapping with McIntosh for the 2nd half. Ellis only played wing for the last term.
22 - Scott Pendlebury (inside)
22 - Adam Treloar (20 inside, 2 wing)
21 - Will Hoskin-Elliott (wing)
21 - Tom Phillips (wing)
21 - Taylor Adams (inside)
17 - Jack Crisp (10 inside, 7 wing)
16 - Steele Sidebottom (FC - 14 inside, 2 wing)
19 - Brodie Grundy (63%)
11 - Mason Cox (37%)
Fairly identical top 6 to the last month of last season with the exception that Hoskin-Elliott has taken Steele's wing and possibly Steele might be transitioning to become more of an inside mid, given Crisp was preferred to fill the wing when Phillips and WHE were resting.
17 - Tom Liberatore (inside)
16 - Jack Macrae (inside)
15 - Liam Picken (14 wing, 1 inside)
14 - Marcus Bontempelli (inside)
14 - Lin Jong (inside)
14 - Jake Stringer (inside)
12 - Lachie Hunter (FC - wing)
12 - Luke Dahlhaus (11 inside, 1 wing)
8 - Matthew Boyd (wing)
7 - Toby McLean (wing)
7 - Caleb Daniel (4 wing, 3 inside)
6 - Rob Murphy (wing)
25 - Tom Boyd (85%)
5 - Travis Cloke (15%)
Aside from Jake Stringer getting considerably more midfield time, I wouldn't read anything much else into the Dogs as they played 8 backs in their team whereas everyone else plays 7 - so Johannissen played as a forward for the first half and then his move back for the 2nd half pushed Boyd and Murphy up to the wings, and Hunter forward flank. Might take a while to settle where everyone fits with Murphy back.
26 - Zach Merrett (24 inside, 2 wing)
24 - Brendon Goddard (17 inside, 7 wing)
22 - Travis Colyer (wing)
22 - Jobe Watson (21 inside, 1 wing)
19 - Dyson Heppell (15 inside, 4 wing)
16 - Brent Stanton (wing)
16 - David Zaharakis (9 wing, 7 inside)
12 - Darcy Parish (FC - inside)
6 - Kyle Langford (3 inside, 3 wing)
31 - Shaun McKernan (94%)
2 - Joe Daniher (6%)
No clear cut 6th mid for this game. Potentially could be a bit of vacillation between Zaharakis and Stanton in that last mid spot for a few weeks yet. Early days but could potentially be a good sign for Stoops with Parish.
26 - Liam Shiels (22 inside, 4 wing)
26 - Tom Mitchell (24 inside, 2 wing)
24 - Jaegar O'Meara (14 inside, 10 wing)
15 - Will Langford (inside)
14 - Isaac Smith (13 wing, 1 inside)
14 - Billy Hartung (wing)
12 - Jack Gunston (11 wing, 1 inside)
10 - Ricky Henderson (wing)
10 - Jarryd Roughead (inside)
6 - Shaun Burgoyne (inside)
28 - Ben McEvoy (85%)
5 - Ty Vickery (15%)
Like the Dogs they run most of their forward line through there at some stage and with 3 new players in the mix + Langford coming back, and them experimenting with Gunston off a wing, this will take a while to settle.
31 - Matt Crouch (inside)
31 - David Mackay (22 wing, 9 inside)
26 - Rory Sloane (inside)
23 - Rory Atkins (18 wing, 5 inside)
22 - Wayne Milera (wing)
21 - Richard Douglas (inside)
16 - Curtly Hampton (FC - inside)
5 - Charlie Cameron (3 inside, 2 wing)
5 - Eddie Betts (wing)
34 - Sam Jacobs (92%)
3 - Josh Jenkins (8%)
Milera, Douglas and Hampton are the early winners with Lyons and Henderson gone and Thompson and Brad Crouch injured. Pyke also returned to his David Mackay: inside mid experiment again and Atkins also received inside mid time for the first time that I've seen at AFL level.
34 - Tom Scully (wing)
26 - Dylan Shiel (22 inside, 4 wing)
26 - Ryan Griffen (20 inside, 6 wing)
25 - Callan Ward (inside)
23 - Josh Kelly (22 inside, 1 wing)
19 - Tim Taranto (15 wing, 4 inside)
18 - Matt Kennedy (15 inside, 3 wing)
7 - Tendai M'Zungu (wing)
34 - Shane Mumford (92%)
3 - Rory Lobb (8%)
Last year, Scully, Whitfield & Kelly just rotated themselves around the 2 wings, so it is interesting with Whitfield suspended that Kelly played almost purely inside. M'Zungu started on the second wing, Taranto took that role over after Tendai's injury. Scully is just an endurance beast.
