Not really seeing your point?
How does that make HD’s post not quite true?
First sentence is quite correct, second is not.
I’m still not following, and it’s okay if you can’t elaborate.
But it seems you’re drawing a very fine line between the media and the AFL/CAS/ASADA et al.
They’re all one, to me.

I understand your point of view but I just don’t agree. Particularly with the last sentence.
There was certainly a lot of media assassinations etc, but a decision handed down by CAS, although to my mind (and any fair minded person) totally unfounded and unfair is certainly not one of those.
And the player in question had no problem with all the negative stuff that had been written, he just didn’t want to join club with half it’s list missing.
Yep. I get that.
I just don’t think you get to point D without a very generous helping of point A.
It was a process.
A thread, if you like, rather than links in a chain.
There’s no way that case gets to the CAS if you take the media out of it
Oops!
Saga thread!
What I don’t understand was that the CAS decision was in January. Had we already got someone over the line then? But surely our 2016 performance would have been pleasing.
Or was it the uncertainty either in 2015 over the pending decision or in 2016 over how the players would fit back in that caused the issue?
What about the flipside? Which of our players will other teams go after?
St Kilda had a crack at Laverde last year.
You’d think that teams bottoming out (Carlton, Gold Coast, Brisbane, maybe Hawthorn) would be looking at our players.
Zaharakis is the main FA. Parish and JD are out of contract, hopefully they’re re-signed soon.
I think everyone else wouldn’t attract huge attention.
Really don’t care.
Anyone on our list that would want to leave this group at this stage, … is highly likely to be someone I would prefer not to have at the club.
Zaka would play for us for less anyway.
Bomber fanatic as is his family. Not stressed about him in slightest. It’ll get sorted out.
Oh and Scott Lucas is his manager.
withdrawn
Our goal to goal line is ok so let’s get the best midfielder to add to our list, also another Ruck.
Is Nicholls worth a look?
I think our ruck position is slightly dicey with Loony, Smack, T-Bell and if we think Draper is any, let alone, all of that.
Gotta be difficult to attract another ruck under those circumstances.
We are in a tough spot on ruck front IMO
We have two injury prone clear number 1 rucks who are late 20’s and still have quite a few years ahead of them - one serviceable at best back up in Smack and then one very very raw 18yr old
No rucks looking for opportunity from other AFL clubs would come to us, unless they were on scrap heap pretty much and knew unlikely to get a game (see Giles at WC).
Only way we secure someone as more competent genuine ruck support than Smack is probably via drafting a mature age state league player (see Darcy Cameron, should debut Swans this week)
I reckon you’d got to identify a bit of a rough diamond and offer him a slightly ridiculous contract, like the Swans did with Shane Mumford. Showed some potential at the Cats, but whilst they had Brad Ottens he wasn’t going to get a regular look-in. Braydon Preuss from North might be one. Depends on a) how many years Goldstein has left (30 next year)? and b) is he likely to get much opportunity if Goldy is fit? It might take say a 4-5 year, $600K a season contract. He’s a speculative, but he has the raw materials to be a Mumford-style enforcing ruckman.

Sheer madness.

Concur, but that’s where we are in attracting another ruck.
Mumford was a far better ruck than Nicholls is now when he moved.
Preuss would have to be Nucking Futs not to wait out Goldstein.
Might be as soon as next season.
If we want another ruck, we have to move on one of our two current rucks.
Simple as that.
If we don’t then why on earth would anyone even consider us?
As I said, Swans did similar with Mummy, who only played 20-odd games for the Cats. The Dogs offered Tom Boyd $6 Million over 6 years having played just 9 AFL games. Don’t be surprised to see this type of recruiting taking place…

I know what you are saying, but offering a speculative/potential rough diamond ruckman, more money than Zerrett, more than Parish will get on his next contract, etc etc, its just silly. He would be on about the same money as Heppell, and just behind Jobe. He would be earning more than probably 80% of our list. And his next contract would be a killer. It just isn’t a sensible thing to do. Not from a list management point of view, not from a financial point of view, and not from a cultural point of view. Agree ruck stocks are a potential weakness for us, but disagree entirely with this method of trying to address that problem.
Probably a pipe-dream, but I hope at some point we can move to the Storm (new) method of payments.
FF gets this.
First Ruck gets this.
First small forward gets this.
Jackets is good. I don’t think he’s that good yet.
