I want to provide some context around how big mids are these days. Even our so called small mids aren’t really that small.
It’s quite remarkable.
John Coleman 185cm
Tony Lockett 191cm
Jason Dunstall 191cm
Doug Wade 188cm
Peter Hudson 188cm
Gary Albert Sr 188cm
Gordon Coventry 183cm
Bob Pratt 180cm
Jack Titus 175cm
Richard Reynolds 179cm
Bill Hutchison 174cm
Albert Thurgood 183cm
Alan Morrow rucked for St Kilda in the 1966 GF at 181-182cm.
I remember the comments when Des Meagher played on the wing for Hawthorn back in the mid to late 60s. He was about 183cm. Most wingers in those days were less than 178cm. Bruce McMaster-Smith, who played in the ‘65 GF, was about 167cm and 58kg. I’m sure @HarryJay would remember if the old-timers hasn’t kicked in.
For a more complete picture you do need to add the playing weight.
Late career Plugger & Doug Wade might not have been that tall, but it’d take an opponent a fair while to run around them.
Perhaps l need to take a rest from this thread for a few weeks. Every time l read/see something about another potential draftee l want us to pick them up. Goater isn’t the latest, but is becoming a firm favourite, l want him or NWM. Then again tomorrow, who knows?
Looking at some different phantom / mock drafts, it looks as though some often mentioned names will be there at the 20-35 range. I’d love EFC to get one more pick or slide 11 for two picks somehow.
Classy, top-level disposal always has a place, and is a weapon at any level.
Winning your own ball is great, but it’s a lot harder to do at afl level than it is in the u18s. In my experience it’s the big physical inside types who are more likely to not live up to high expectations after being drafted once they have to start performing against the big boys (when we’re talking about mids at least, talls are a different kettle of fish)
