2021 Draft Watch

Hey @Aceman, what do you see Murley projecting as at AFL level? As in what role and style of player do you see him becoming?

I really like his attributes and think he’d be an amazing get if he slid mid to late draft. Curious as to the player you would look at him developing into

Knevitt is the type of player we have been after for a few years. By the time Stringer finishes he will be coming into his prime. Big bodied midfield distributor

See Knightmare on BF sounded angry about the possibility of Chesser being picked in the first round . He is definitely not a fan .

Knightmare - the bloke who said we’d need at least 4 first round picks to trade up for Logan McDonald?

I’m slowly changing my tune, that he could be more suited as a 3rd tall forward.

He’s not the burst out of a pack type, I’m sure he could do it with size and practice……. But he’s more likely to give off the handball (in tight), than try and push his way through a pack.

His marking prowess is very very good…… but as I’ve said a few times, he’s not a great kick.

well no one let us trade up to grab him.

Is it actually a top prospect?

That’s good enough for me to want Chesser.

Why wouldn’t you buy every house in the same street if you could afford it? I think that would be cool.

AFL draft prospect in lockdown after being diagnosed with Covid-19

An unvaccinated AFL draft prospect has contracted Covid-19, forcing clubs to cancel interviews with a player considered a certainty to be drafted.

A Victorian footballer rated a top-40 prospect in next month’s AFL draft has contracted the coronavirus and is currently in lockdown.

The player’s agent notified clubs this week of his Covid-19 diagnosis, as well as the fact he is unvaccinated.

His manager confirmed to the Herald Sun the teenager was booked in to have his first vaccination dose on Tuesday this week, but the appointment was postponed after his diagnosis last Saturday.

It’s understood both of his parents are now vaccinated as a work requirement.

The AFL this week mandated that all AFL and AFLW players and football department staff must be vaccinated to take part in training and games.

That announcement followed extensive discussions at government level and with the AFL Players’ Association.

The plan is for the player to receive his first dose in two Mondays’ time – assuming he tests negative next Saturday — then for him to be fully vaccinated by, or before, November 24, when the first round of the draft will be held.

He will be able to start pre-season on time if that timeline occurs, and his draft status should not be impacted.

Multiple teams were set to interview him this week, including one in person, but they were put on hold because he had symptoms the first few days after his diagnosis.

Representatives from 10 or more clubs have spoken to the footballer or inquired about him and he is as good as certain to be drafted.

Recruiters are asking prospective draftees about their vaccination status, while some players sought clarity on the situation in their interviews before the mandate announcement.

Andrew Dillon, the AFL’s executive general manager of football, expects only a limited number of AFL and AFLW players and staff to be vaccine reluctant but they are in the process of “collating that information”.

Adelaide’s Deni Varnhagen is one AFLW player who was resisting being vaccinated but that was before this week’s AFL mandate.

She is expected to meet with AFL-appointed medical experts.

Dual St Kilda best-and-fairest winner Georgia Patrikios has been on leave since the day the vaccine mandate news was released but the Saints have not confirmed that as the reason for her absence.

AFLPA chief executive Paul Marsh said this week the player union would continue to speak to footballers who didn’t want to be vaccinated.

“We don’t tend to talk about individual circumstances but we are aware of players from throughout the competition,” Marsh said.

“We have had lots of conversations with individual players and we will continue to support any player in this position.”

For those who know about these things, the superfooty article in the Bobby Hill thread suggests Rachele has “tricks” that would make Essendon supporters forget about Hill.

I have only seen the highlights vid, but from my viewing of those there seems a general lack of the sort of tricks that I might expect to see from the sort of genuine crumbling small forward that I would have been looking for. Is this just a case of the highlights editor thinking marks are more interesting, or is he not a genuine crumbling option with lightning pace?

I reckon @wimmera1 might have something to say about some of the stuff in that article …

Well I’m not gonna call her fat, if that helps.

I was talking in general, not specifically about pick 11.
However considering it’s the draft thread and using my analogy, I would use pick 11 to select another position on the ground we need elite players. Eg, Rachele.

Langford and Cox are currently playing well on the wings.
Perkins is developing. But he and Stringer are great forward/mids.

I think if we are going to trade for or use a high draft pick on a midfielder. It should be one with height/size to diversify against our current permanent type mids.
“Merrett, Parish, McGrath, Caldwell and throw in Shiel”

For example. I loved the Dunkley trade attempt.
Didn’t love the Shiel trade (but his a good footballer, so it’s not the end of the world)

At the time the Shiel trade was great. I think you would struggle to find a blitzer who thought otherwise.

In retrospect now people think wow since DP3 has come on and Shiel has been out injured it was a bad trade?

I don’t think it was. Shiel wanting in was a big turning point for us as a club.

We had brought in Stringer,Saad and Smith and whilst Stringer has since recovered none were at the top of their game like Shiel.

Especially as we picked the Giants pockets of Caldwell since.

I too liked us asking the question of Dunkley. Why not? We haven’t come across as unreasonable. Same with Bobby Hill.

I’m a bit skeptical about just going after tall guys that midfield in juniors. Height is down the list of priorities to me in a player(unless your recruiting a ruckman).
