Whereas funnily enough my view is we take best available non-tall.
Hello, I thought it was a big mistake at the time.
I never rated him at GWS, thought he was inconsistent.
I thought we would get him for one first due to GWS salary cap.
but them offloadin scully and Pattons contracts for a packet of chips stuffed any leverage We had.
I was glad we got him, would have liked cheaper cost but option was that or miss out and he heads to blues.
This is from DraftCentral 2017 about Charlie Constable before the draft. It appears he was “Big fish in a small pond “ when playing underage and VFL. He has not able to take the next step due to lack of speed and bursting out. We have to be very careful extrapolating U18 capabilities to AFL level.
[Charlie Constable has had a strong year at all levels, playing at end of the ground or in as an inside midfielder. Standing at 190cm, Constable is the modern prototype of midfielders – where he wins the contested ball and dishes it out to teammates by hand with ease. In games filled with fumbles and skill errors throughout the National AFL Under 18 Championships, Constable was a class above – with his clean disposal and smarts on full show. Whilst he might lack some speed and endurance that other of the top midfielders have, he is a pure midfielder who wins the football, gets to the right spots, disposes of the ball well and plays in a similar mould to Carlton’s Patrick Cripps.
STRENGTHS
- Footy IQ
- Contested ball winning
- Versatile
- Clearance work
- Marking inside 50
Constable’s footy IQ is through the roof. His smarts on the inside and across either arches allow him to read the play and know where to run to receive the ball. While he doesn’t have the athletic traits that others do from the stoppages, his smarts to find a teammate with ease under pressure is outstanding. His can collect the ball by a handball receive or pick it up off the ground – where he doesn’t fumble and gets it to a teammate, mostly by hand – but on occasions via his right foot.
I rate Caldwell who we would have got with the future first and we traded for which is good….
But we didn’t cough up two top 5 draft picks and getting an AA player at the time I still think is a pretty good deal.
Goater seems like the perfect type to add to our midfield group. His explosiveness is exciting.
User name checks out.
Agreed. I just couldn’t see what everyone else here was raving about him. I thought I would trust their judgement. Still waiting.
Of course you would buy the whole street, it would give you the opportunity to build a mega development with a much better return than a house in Footscray
Sinn or Erasmus for me with pick 11.
Love the highlight at 0:32… must’ve run a good 30 metres before kicking it!!
That’s his trademark
I feel like we have focussed heavily on Victorian talent over the last few drafts.
It’s been few and far between, that we have selected a kid from interstate…. The last ones being Snelling, Zerk-Thatcher & Guelfi.
Whether this is because of cost cutting, or that we’re conscious of the go home factor (which is stronger than ever)……… we always tend to go with local kids.
I’d say Wanganeen-Millera would be one we’d be confident of keeping long term, since there is family in Melbourne…. Plus the prospect of picking Tex Wanganeen as a rookie.
i was always on team johnny sinns
You need to count the 3 players we bid on unsuccesfully in the past 2 years.
An unsuccessful bid still makes the other club pay value, though.
Also, under the rules up until literally one second before we made our bid for Coleman, that bid was successful.
It’s all part of the games being played on draft night.
You want to make sure these clubs are paying full price for academy kids…… plus it’s likely we want a certain player at our next pick…. Who might get through.
I think that’s a very cynical take. I feel like we wanted those guys and the bid for Coleman in particular was in the second round and much earlier than projected.
Cynics would suggest a bounce every 15 metres or so.
