2022 trade speculation (Part 3)

The Suns could have restructured some of their current contracts to avoid paying over the cap.

That would be funny, though. Force the AFL into basically fining themselves, then apply for another assistance package in a few years.

Yeah, I don’t get it. Surely someone would have been willing to take on Bowes at 425k a year over 4 years. Is that what Geelong have done?

The salary dump should only be available to teams outside the 8, the AFL has just handed another way for the top clubs to replenish and rebuild without bottoming out.

Equalisation is all about preventing rich clubs from outspending the AFL run clubs. It’s about keeping expenditure low and profits high.

I am surprised that clubs are just happy to watch as the good get gooder

That’s what got them in this mess. They pushed Bowes money back to pay others and got themselves in a pickle. Exactly what Pies did with Treloar.

I think there’s a whole bunch wrong with what’s happened since though. Gold Coast didn’t need to advertise pick 7 as part of the deal before he’d even picked a club. They could have started a genuine negotiation without that being part of it and see where it got them. That could have easily been a fallback option. And I’m certain the AFL is going to change that rule about smoothing out the money.

Pretty sure the sun’s have about 6 second round picks which they won’t use

Inevitable.

Contracted players holding the balance of power in club negotiations is continuing to stain the idea of equalisation across the league.

I don’t know how you get the AFLPA to sign off on any changes (because they wouldn’t) but this feels like the beginning of a much much bigger problem for the league in years to come.

From my understanding originally GC offered that pick because they didnt think you could smooth it out over more years. Then later, once the deal had been offered, the AFL allowed it to be smoothed out.

I think they were a victim of circumstances in this case if i understand it correctly.

That’s not the point.

Two top 10 selections for a guy playing VFL and he’s now not playing for them either. I mean he’s got some talent and may very well make it at the cattery. But still.

Well lets get some of those…we need them

They can change their minds. Geelong have been into Bowes for ages apparently, so what would they want with Pick 7.

Worst year to hold the pick 1.

Their first two picks are 5 and 45. They traded out the other ones for Ben Long and Tom Berry.

Given Bowes didn’t want to leave and was pushed out they couldn’t then go back and reneg on what they’d already stated was on offer.

They might in 20 years when we win a flag.

Was trying to say they could have paired Bowes with any other of those second rounders and they’d have had clubs keen.

I don’t think it would be a very good look for them to offer something and then want to reneg on it.

Sure things changed but maybe they didn’t want to lose face.

Well haven’t they had a successful off season. And people complain about ours.

Could’ve, but didn’t, because they’re horrid at managing their list. As evidenced by the multitude of players they’ve shipped off for nothing or less over the last few years.

There is only 1 party at fault here.
