Why does Cleaver keep getting mentioned?
Is he doing much in our vfl team?
Don’t seem to notice him much.
The trouble with those little pen sketches is, all of those players sound so good that they appear to be just what we need. I still maintain that our greatest need right now is a KPF, but there are plenty of other areas we also need depth in, such as the ruck, given that Flip is highly unlikely to go around again. I also expect Hepp to hang up the boots, so we need a ready replacement for him as well, or perhaps he would be better covered in the trade and draft at the end of the year.
He’s solid
more defence first attack second.
lockdown small defender.
I doubt he is a chance for us.
But he signed up for Essendon VFL on hope of getting a SSP spot, thats why he’s being mentioned - similar to Narkle if it wasn’t for mid season draft, we likely wouldnt have these guys playing for us.
He contributes probably more than LORD at VFL level but without his run and dash and agility.
That said after baldwin, Cox, VOSS, Monty - VFL talent drops off quite a bit.
Wanganeen has moments.
Ideally we have a few more AFL players in there that help out in the midfield, which would make us more competitive.
it’s a hard balance cos even though by reports on here they are taking the vfl seriously and trying to align things, it’s always going to be hard for the vfl side with all the injuries the club keeps having.
from the weekend alone there was not 1 essendon listed player in the midfield (ok starting midfield) and 2 list in the forwardline (voss and wanganeen).
now it’s nothing against the guys who fill in in the vfl team, they are what they are, and they are in the position they are in.
but geez it’s gotta make it harder to develop in the vfl like people want, when there’s just not alot out there that is of the quality needed when you chuck in the constant injuries the club has.
Ned long probably deserves a call up for hawks after that performance 30+ and 3 goals.
but yeh where were our developing mids. Might be hard to get in Hawks team after beating saints as well, I guess they are done with tanking, so pick #1 to Eagles.
I was hoping Tsatas played a half, as it was rumoured.
But maybe next week we will have Tsatas and maybe Snelling there. Plus Massimo on the wing if schedules work out as the AFL emergency
How dare you threaten me with a good time
I wouldn’t be expecting too much out of this MSD.
Due to covid there were many draft age players with no exposed form who were not drafted. List managers then got to see them play in the VFL or other leagues and drafted via the MSD.
Last year the draft age players had been seen by list managers. All the good players got drafted.
This year’s MSD is pretty thin. And we have pick 11.
We aren’t going to be able to pick a player who will have an immediate impact so hopefully they draft for long term need.
I had a wry chuckle when l saw that.
In and of itself that connection is not a good enough reason to draft a player.
Western Sector Public Health Unit (WSPHU ) ???
Wouldnt be surprised if we passed on Wed. Not many spots up for grabs on the senior list at the end of the year and we need room for the draft and possible free agent/trade targets
They’re all thin, COVID or not - by my count 11 guys have made it to best 22 status in the 60 ish picks taken so far - and most of them are role players. Lots and lots of 0 gamers.
Some guys have eg an injury that destroys their 18s year, or break out in state league - but realistically, not that many.
They’re mostly only 6 month contracts. (A few put an 18 month deal on their heads).
I’m not so sure. We certainly have a lot of small players we are utilising as small forwards but none of them are really small forwards, more small midfielders that have been shoehorned into a forward role. Guelfi, Snelling, Davey, Tex and Menzie are all of tis category. I’d love a real high quality small forward on our list.
Small forwards on the list. We don’t need to draft another one via a Mid season rookie draft
33 Alwyn Davey
36 Jayden Davey
43 Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti
11 Will Snelling
40 Tex Wanganeen (R )
35 Matt Guelfi
47 Jye Menzie ( R )
Is Davey Jr a long term small forward, or is he being played there because he has some attributes and it gave him some AFL exposure?
He wasn’t a small forward in U18’s IIRC.
Couldn’t agree more. Perhaps Jayden Davey in time can become that high quality small forward who is fast, has that touch of class, instinctively knows where the goals are and does the defensive stuff but we really need to allow another 3 years for him to develop and be a proper threat at AFL level with any sort of consistency.
You only need to look around at how influential and critical guys like Rankine, Rachele, Charlie Cameron, Papley etc are to their sides.
Having said that, I wouldn’t draft one in the MSD.
If we get one in we need to know or be super confident that they will be elite in that role at AFL level. We have enough borderline/jobber/long shot guys already on the list in that area of the ground.
I’d absolutely love it if we could fashion a way to get Nick Watson in the draft or failing that get an elite small forward from another club this trade/FA period or next.
Jayden is the goal kicking Forward, while Alwyn was Midfield but now Playing Forward as that’s what we need or are looking for. Next year with Jayden available it will be interesting.
Alwyn is a high half forward. He doesn’t have AFL fitness to play full time mid yet. He isn’t a natural stay at home small forward but his brother is. Menzie can do both
