2023 Mid Season Draft - Wednesday May 31 2023

I rekcon you’d know much better than me. :love_you_gesture:

We used to scream “Go Marshy” at Windy Hill years ago. I think the poor bloke died recently.

Ian Marsh died of cancer in 2021 aged 65.

Yes I would.

Some schools that’s is. Just because it’s a private or independent school doesn’t necessarily equal cashed up success.

Nothing stops clubs passing on 18 year olds if they’re not ready. Happens every year.

I don’t understand why you’d take away the opportunity from those who are ready.

As well as Hunter kicking 4, Buller kicked 5 for Sydney’s VFL team.

I really like the look of Maric from the limited supply he got. Looks to have some real smarts

You’ll also find that private schools attract football talent by offering scholarships. In Archie’s year, I was aware of about 6 football lads on scholarships.

Be surprised if it was so few, I went to an AGSV (co-Ed) school and we had 4 on footy scholarships, it’s gotten a lot bigger business in the 20+ years since.

School I went to here in SA hands out plenty. They have a huge budget they spend on footy and cricket….huge. Most schools just mark it down as a loss and move on. Pretty sure we recently beat Wesley in Melbourne (back when I played we used to get belted by Wesley, bigger, stronger, faster)

Pretty sure we had 4 or 5 guys that got selected in the SA u/19 squad (I think) playing in our 1st 11 for cricket
I know one of them has put cricket aside to concentrate on footy.

Just to be clear, private schools handing out football scholarships to prop up the egos of their “old boys” doesn’t address systemic inequalities, or provide a more level playing field. Either in the current system, or in some sort of future raised draft age system. Although there’s a fair chance it would push those scholarship holders to have “do year 12 over 2 years” to be part of their scholarship Ts&Cs.

(No idea if that’s what was trying to be argued, as I have lost track of where this was going?)

(And no one wants to hear me rant further about “elite” private schools using sport as a marketing device, and all of their “old boys” in the media as free marketers to push their agenda to maximise the $$ that come through their doors )

Don’t know how much it has to do with old boys.

The idea is you buy one Archie Perkins type, and that lets you attract 10 families of paying kids who are good enough that they kinda might go on with it if absolutely everything goes right and daddy sends him to the right school.
Oh and then they go beg the local Lib member for a 4000 seat grandstand on the 7th footy oval and a new bar for the 5th pavilion, because “education”.

It’s not a good state of affairs.
Clearly works for the schools financially.

Buller good chance to debut this week

He looks to have climbed the mountain to get his AFL debut?

I was surprised we took Hunter over Buller in the MSD, but time will tell. Both seem to be good FFs but Buller is the taller of the 2 and I think has kicked more goals this season. Both are young and probably both will make it in the AFL. I just hope that Hunter ends up the better of the two.

Hunter played less WAFL league games this year and kicked more goals

Buller 5 games for 8 goals

Hunter 3 games for 11 goals

Buller was playing for top of the table Claremont as opposed to Hunter in a struggling Demons side, so one could argue Jaiden had lesser service also

Great info. Thanks.

Buller looks more developed to the naked eye. (Think he’s a year or two older so that’s expected).

Yep, Buller is about 11 months older, and I don’t think he’s had the injury run that Hunter has had. We definitely chose the one who should be ‘less developed’, so given his WAFL output could be seen as having the greater upside.

Let’s hope the selectors got it right for us!
