My gut instinct is starting to fear that we won’t have a Dani Marshall delisting announcement, but a retirement announcement.
Her parents are due out here for Christmas, and if the club has hinted she won’t get a contract, and no other club is interest in a trade/picking her up as a free agent, she might call retirement and head home to the States in the New Year.
AN INCREDIBLE 11-club deal has blown open the AFLW’s trade period.
AFL.com.au can reveal that the seismic deal, which all clubs are in agreement over and was being lodged at the AFL with just half an hour remaining in the window, features 11 different teams and will see the overwhelming majority of players still on the trade table get to their club of choice.
AFLW Draft Order: Your club’s picks as they stand
The clubs involved are Adelaide, Brisbane, Collingwood, Essendon, Fremantle, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Richmond, West Coast and the Western Bulldogs.
It will see Gabby Newton and Ash Brazill get to the Dockers, Montana McKinnon head to the Tigers, Katie Lynch and Charlotte Wilson to the Suns, Kirsty Lamb to the Power, Maddi Gay to the Bombers, Lauren Ahrens and Jasmyn Smith to the Dogs and Lily Johnson to the Demons.
A host of first-round picks in next Monday night’s AFLW draft will also swap hands as part of the 11-club agreement.
Last time I talked to her, she said she wanted to play another year, but I suspect that decision was reliant on her retaining a list spot. I didn’t know her family was coming.
I’m obviously thrilled. I have been expecting her to be delisted pretty much since she got dropped the second time and have prepared myself for it happening, to the point that I went to training and bought a jumper for her to sign the day before the Geelong final wondering if I’d ever see her again.
I’ve said it a bunch of times before… the whole thing is still kind of a miracle to me and I don’t think will be possible going forward as the local talent pool of junior girls gets deeper.
I will always have the memory of her kicking that long goal at Marvel against Hawkthorn and it will forever go along side all the great things I’ve seen supporting Essendon.
I think if she played one more year and then retired I’d absolutely be fine with it, but I hope the club would give her a farewell of some kind. Her career is unique and may not be replicated.
I’m pretty happy with the moves in the end, didn’t end up really sacrificing a whole lot draft-wise and Gay and Keaney should give us a solid boost in the next few seasons.
This is my go at guessing at our best 21 for 2024 as it stands
FB Brown Clarke
HB Gay Gamble Busch
C Keaney Prespakis Gee
HF Clarke Alexander Jacques
FF Toogood Scott
Fol Wales Nanscawen Cain
Int Vogt Walker VDH Gaylor Dyke
EMG Radford Phillips Van Dyke
Depth Williamson Van Loon Morcom Marshall
LTI Bannister
Assuming Bannister is out for at least most of the season, otherwise obviously she’s best 21. Also assuming Gay plays HB as that’s where she’s mostly been the last 2 seasons and I think where she’d be most beneficial to us? And assuming Gaylor is best-21 ready. Radford very stiff, Phillips too if she’s back. If a few of our draftees are best 21 quality there’d be some real selection pressure assuming a mostly healthy team.
Just had a chat with Nat Wood. Player sponsors have already got the very long version, but a couple notes explicitly on this thread’s topic:
Cat Phillips is likely to return. Working through fitness etc. Not least because of our queries/pressure, maternity is now treated differently to normal injuries: e.g. if Daria is out for part of next year she’s out for ALL of next year. That is NOT the case for Cat – she could return mid-season (and bump out the 30th player? Not sure.)
Asked about the draft, she didn’t explicitly state we would only take two picks, but it would be fair from her further comments to conclude it was the case.
Commentary on the compressed trade/draft period being a stress, but that it was still much better than before this past season, where some players were strung out till March being getting cut. Said nice things about Alana and Renee.
Can someone share some insight on why so many ex/past VFLW/AFLW Bombers are up in arms about this on socials?
From comments above it appears rough but also dictated by tight numbers allowed on the list? Genuinely trying to understand a bit better. Ugle comments being hidden seems over the top but it certainly doesn’t appear strictly professional for any of them to do this in the public domain without a really great reason…
From what I’ve seen, it’s not that “many” players and it’s overwhelming sad not aggro; most of the dramatic responses are family etc.
Courtney didn’t appear to get filtered for any overt reason; I’m guessing there was a connection problem, she posted the same text again, and if you haven’t worked this out yet, Instagram is all sorts of stupid when it comes to detecting bots.
I know some details from very inside sources, but can’t say too much as it’s too soon, and to respect the players still there.
A broad way of describing things would be regime change. The VFLW program and its philosophies (pre-AFLW S7) operated differently to the current AFLW program.
