Hmm, more problematic for other roles.
Jack Miller is one for the 2027 draft to keep an eye on 4 goals in a losing team for western as a 16yo, if Tassie does go ahead he’d one they would be hoping to kick on as promised
That was last weekend
Blowing a Megan in WA so not a day for skills, but a lively start for Huss with some candy being sold and an early goal.
We need him to just chill a bit
Fair grab from Curtin
Greeves was among the best for Vic Metro in a strong win travelling away against WA to get their Champs campaign back on track. Greeves is incredibly consistent and dependable with his attacking output and again found plenty of the footy. The extremely windy conditions made precise ball use difficult, but he was fairly efficient and attacking with his decision making. He’s a regular goal scorer from midfield and again chipped in, but some of his pressure around the contest was lacking at times.
Greeves looks good, the only concern is, could he play any other positions at afl level? We see issues with guys like tsatas that with good midfield depth players that are one dimensional can end up a poor draft selection. Just looking at the ladder i actually think we’ll end up with picks 9 and 10. I think Essendon and Melbourne will finish above Carlton and they’ll get the de koning compo.
On another note, W.A footy is in real trouble, they need a development academy, you can see how much academies elevate talent now particularly when you look at the suns and bachar houli academy, two areas that were previously producing near on nothing and are now providing multiple draftees per year. It’s really poor from the WAFC how much they’ve let their states football slide.
Fred closed out what has been a solid but slightly inconsistent Champs series for him personally for a WA team that struggled overall. He definitely finished strong here with a significant improvement in his contested game, winning a stack of clearances at stoppage and applying strong defensive pressure. On the other hand, it was difficult for him to damage as much as he typically does with his elite disposal given the tough swirling winds.
Its a great post and I’d also add somehow reigning premiers like Birsbane and the rorters like cotton on contune to seemingly have unlimited $ to offer the next FA. FARKED.
I’d like to see top 4 teams banned from getting FAs.
I think the RFA and trade systems just need the ‘destination club’ element removed from players hands, will even up the farkedness A LOT.
You want to leave, best deal is gorf or west coke. see ya Bailey.
The destination club thing is the whole point of the FA system. It’s basically the compromise the AFL makes with the players to stop the players challenging the entire draft system in court, where it would quickly be declared an illegal restraint of trade. The players know that completely free market list management system would be a disaster for the comp, so they’ve tacitly agreed not to upset that very lucrative applecart. Of course it turns out that the players running the AFLPA trend older, while the younger and more junior and (especially) soon-to-be draftees get much less say, so it’s their demographic that the AFLPA generally sells out or screws over to protect the interests of Dangerfield etc who run the shop.
A solid outing but unspectacular outing for CDT. He dominated the tap work more than the pure stats would suggest with Metro swapping between three rucks to give each of them a chance. He got involved as he always does post tap, but wasnt quite as clean or constructive with the ball as we typically see from him, and I’d still love to see more of him as a key forward.
That is an interesting proposal…without giving it much thought; I like it! Even though you’d have to rename it from Free Agency to something else.
I would like to see the team acquiring the player being charged draft capital similar to academy players.
If you get a player on $x and y years length of contract it hits a certain band where draft capital needs to be made up (first round exempt)
For example if Brissy get Drapes band 1.
We get a first round pick and loose Draper
Brisbane get Draper and loose some second and third rounders.
Those picks go to no one so disappear, making second and third round picks better for all teams.
It might mean that Brisbane need to trade a player of value for draft currency, which will also help equalise the competition.
I don’t think either CDT or Lindsay will go pick 1 at it stands. There’s likely to still be some hesitating in picking a ruck or a half back as pick 1.
Super hard to see who will go that high now - Im starting to think some of the fast creative midfielders like Sam Cumming, Harley Barker, Oliver Greaves could end up there.
Good points on Lyndsay it is a hard call to pick a small half back flanker when you are a professional recruiter hoping to keep your job - good player but maybe not a pick 1
Riley Onley certainly has his deficiencies (such as defensive effort) but there’s no doubt that when things are clicking for him there are few more impressive athletes in this draft pool. This was a huge game from him, and he was a major factor in Vic Country getting their first win of the carnival. The 13 score involvements were a game high, and his work at stoppage was powerful and creative.
