Completely depends on the deal. Anything that’s a good deal for us is likely to be looked at as a bad deal by the other club involved unless there’s some extra wrinkle in there like bid matching or whatever.
I don’t think any club would straight up accept two late teens picks in exchange for a premium top 5 draft pick.
We also need to have at least one eye on next year. I don’t think we should be going all chips in on this draft. I’d rather try and use those late first early second rounder picks to sniff out favourable trades into next years draft.
Agreed. As an example, I very much hope we do not use the first pick of night 2 of the draft, but trade it away. It often gets a premium. You only need one club that really likes some kid left on the table to get a future 1st.
I think we really need a “death-ride” next year. Heaven knows this year has been terribly uninteresting without it.
I think Pascoe told CJohns the other day that the positive for us is not our top pick but all the great options that will be available to us in the late teen/20s range, I’m hoping Rosa can turn those into gold.
Some thoughts on some of the main guys I have watched over champs so far. A lot has been discussed already so I’m trying not to regurgitate, some might find it handy for those that aren’t ferociously checking the thread.
Walker - Athletically superior to everyone on the ground. Has an ability to move at pace and pick up the ball one handed. His kicking at times is horrendous but should improve. I’d be comfortable with a pick 1 bid.
Butler - Arguably the highest upside. Played mostly high half forward before the injury. Would’ve liked to have seen a full game rotating mid\forward. Would be happy with him at pick 1 but would have liked to have seen more.
Drever - Star. I’ve seen him burst out of the middle and kick a goal from outside 50m at least 3 times. Uses it well, I’ve seen some people compare to Finn Callaghan but I’m not sure he had the explosive pace, perhaps he does but I haven’t seen it.
HVH - Underwhelming as discussed. So far his best game appears to have been in the futures match. At pick 1 I still think he is too much of a risk for us. Only way that changes is if he plays some VFL games and goes really well. For me he looks more like a pick 3-5.
Williams - Really like this guy although played heavily off half back. I would have liked to see some on ball usage. Ball use is great, he is a Merrett replacement as a small mid/ball user. If we had pick 5 instead of 1 he would be in our hitting zone.
Mellody - Got heaps and heaps and heaps of football off half back. I was a little worried about his ball use but then at times he seemed to be able to lace targets on both feet. Think again he is in the 5-10 mark instead of our pick, couldn’t have done much more at champs.
Not doubting you but interesting that Ed Pascoe said the exact opposite regarding Butler’s upside, said that what we see now is likely what we’ll get in future.
Interesting I think he is only scratching the surface. Half forward can be the toughest role in footy to dominate a game. If the end product is what he is now, he probably is not worth pick 1. Personally I think there’s a lot of upside to see him as a goal kicking mid rather than a 15 disposal 1-2 goals half forward.
I haven’t read/heard what Ed said specifically, but he could be 100% correct and interpreted in the wrong way.
Take Nick Watson as an example. What we’re seeing now from Watson at AFL level is essentially the same thing we saw from him as a junior. Its not like he’s developed into a different type of player. He’s just learning how to use his elite traits to damage more consistently. Perhaps improving his reading of the play. Becoming more confident in asserting himself within their forward group etc.
In defence of Ed Pascoe, I think he was referring to Butler as a forward. Over Champs we haven’t seen him in more midfield minutes so as a forward it is what you see is what you get.

19 +16 is similar in points to pick 5. Plus if we agree not to bid on Cochrane but bid on Walker instead. They will likely get Dogs first rounder and future first rounder. But they could also trade out 19 or 16 into a future pick.
One of the real surprise packets of this year’s Champs series, Jack Slattery was called up as an overager to help bolster the SA key forward stocks and has likely ended up as the leading goal kicker for the carnival with 16 majors. In this game he showed his all round forward craft, crumbing and snapping two of his four goals to complement his usual lead-mark game. He also flew for a few spectacular marking attempts that he didn’t quite manage to pull down. A feature for Slattery has been his accuracy in front of the big sticks with only 2 behinds in his 4 games.
