#22 Irving ‘MO22IE’ Mosquito

That he’s presented significantly overweight in successive preseasons suggests the motivation of a one year contract is good business. No one’s doubting his talent, but he could prepare himself better.

Here’s my answer - none of them should be over-contracted! I agree with you wholeheartedly on Gleeson and Clarke.

That’s not entirely true: when he was drafted we needed him to put on weight, he went a little to far the other way in year 2. No debate there.

I’ll reiterate though, I’ve got little interest in penalising guys who have a few extra kilos if they can football.

I’m more worried about why we insist on keeps guys who can’t get up to a playing weight after 7 seasons than ones who can drop down to it in a pre-season. Or worse still ones who have glaring skill deficiencies

Essentially give me podgy Stringer and Walla over Gleeson and Clark any day.

I trust our dieticians over our skills coaches

Hope Mozzie makes a full recovery and gets on the park for a couple of games, even VFL, at the tail end of 2021.
Indigenous players are usually a joy to watch and hopefully he eventually consistently shows his talents at AFL level.

Over weight !! More frogshite

It is like the dikkwads who call Walla fat.

Body shape is very misleading

I’d wager its reflects the doubts the club has on irvings ability to apply himself to his rehab.

I’d be disappointed if they didn’t at least include a trigger clause for a 2nd year

OK let’s put it this way then.

If Walla gets far leaner he will be a much better player.

His fitness is holding him back big time.

He almost certainly does have a trigger - and it’s the easiest trigger to reach. It isn’t dependent on form, games or best and fairest results - just applying himself to his rehab.

100% if he does all the right things to return from his injury then he gets another deal. If he doesn’t do those things, cut him loose. The club doesn’t owe him anything

Moving Irsquito

Tough spoonerism

Notice the number of letters swapped?

2 and 2 Oooooooh omen he will win everything in the year 2022 including a big contract.

Seems weird to me, two year deal seemed appropriate with his injury. Only thing I can think of is a second year trigger clause if he rehabs well.

You have no basis at all for this.

If he gets “lleaner” he may not have the same physical power and tackling ability. He has the same build as many indiginous players and it is part of their character, and not a disability.

His endurance has been an issue from the very beginning of his career and whilst he managed to get it to an acceptable level, I would argue his GPS numbers would have been off last year and he looked to be carrying a bit of extra weight.

Do I have absolute proof? No.

But from memory our best kick inside 50 managed a grand total of 4 goal assists. I blame that on work rate and conditioning.

To use your argument re: indigenous players, Jai Bolton took himself from having an acceptable body shape and tank to the next level and reaped the rewards. If Walla has the same sort of preseason he will be a superstar.

Jai Bolton is a very different body type, mor like Michael Long or Andrew Lovett. Walla is more like Morris Rioli, Cyril Rioli etc with that core strength.

So with no proof and watching on the TV lke the rest of us, you conclude Walla was fat. It has been stated before that he has special dietary needs that were not well catered in the bubble.

What are his dietary needs? FWIW I don’t think he’s ever been overweight, or unfit.
Seems to always get goals in the 4th quarter from hard running.

I don’t think he is fat. Just not in the kind of condition which allows him to dominate games.

You don’t like my example? Fine.

I give you Willie Rioli. A player that would not have succeeded at AFL level without trimming down.

I would be happy to lose some of Walla’s core strength in order for him to have improved running capacity, which would see him get to more contests, outwork his opponent more easily and improve his consistency.

When did we Essington him? When he was part time, when he was in a hub or when he was injured?

TBH I feel he’s an exciting player but severely lacking in a lot of aspects. People saying he’s overweight but he’s way too small to affect tackles, just gets brushed off. Walla is 10 times the player.

I noticed most of the contracts handed out late this year were only one year, only Stewart got 2 years. Guelfi, Laverde etc have shown a lot more than Moz, how does doing an ACL make Moz a better prospect? A player with practically no runs on the board, whose strength is speed and agility, allegedly with fitness motivation issues, who just did an ACL…

You mention Clarke and Gleeson, I thought Clarke did an ok job of tagging a few times, but Gleeson was always overrated. Neither will probably play another game. Not sure you’d want Moz rookied like them though anyway?

who?

I count 25 players with a contract expiring in 2021. 13 senior and 5 recruits with contracts 2 or more years.

Giving Mozzie a 1 year extension puts him in the pack, no harsh treatment compared to his peers.
