I really wonder what was happening behind the scenes with the contract delay.
There was clearly something at play that we just don’t know the details. For Mozzie to be the last contract to be announced, as an afterthought in the AGM, it wasn’t a smooth process.
It’s pretty obvious that the reason we gave him one year was to ensure he did his rehab properly and maintained an acceptable weight. While you can put some blame on the hub situation, there were multiple reports that Mozzie arrived to preseason last year well over weight.
It’s fine to put some sort of pressure contract wise on players to ensure they maintain professional standards. It’s why I’m against long term contracts generally.
Its not surprising that we have finally heard that “Jake is committed to losing weight” given that surprise surprise, it’s a contract year for Jake next year. I imagine the next contract Jake signs will be full of incentives for hitting weight targets and setting PBs in preseason
One year contract for a player that will not get on the park in 2021? Strange decision. I would have thought 2 years if the club rates him or show him the door if they don’t rate him. I have no idea what the 12 month extension is supposed to achieve.
Like saucy said, the club want to see him commit to his rehab. He like Stringer and Walla need to become more professional. I read somewhere that Mozzie was already carrying a few extra kg’s. Not sure if that’s true, but if it is, he is lucky to even get the 1 year.
Truck and the club are setting higher standards, something no one should be complaining about.
Fkn, this thread is how it starts. Someone mentions that they’d heard he was fat, when pressed goes with “I heard”. (Probably based on the stupid perspective photos and the whole Saad is carrying a few kgs pre season meme), and then all of a sudden it’s a blitz truth that Mozzie isn’t committed to his football.
Here’s some things. We invested in Mozzie as a long term prospect. Last pre season was his first real pre season. Of course he wasn’t at the fitness levels of some others, we wanted him to focus on his studies. But no one on here has ever suggested that he hasn’t put in, and hasn’t worked to get up to speed.
Then we had the lockdown followed by the hub, which was sht for everyone, let alone a kid from Halls Creek.
And yet he still got himself into the senior team and provided about 50% of all Essendon’s highlights for the year.
Then he did an ACL. Horrible break for the kid.
And now on here he’s a kid who isn’t committed and doesn’t work hard enough and needs that push. That is garbage. I can’t accept that. People are winding themselves up based on no evidence just to convince themselves that the club is right. If the club is doing this (without there being some positive incentive for Mozzie, not just “you won’t get delisted”), then the club is wrong.
I generally agree with the sentiment but 2 things
A if others have done nothing to deserve faith, then neither has mozzie.
B I can’t exactly see clarke or gleeson right about now thinking the club has a lot of faith in them.
I imagine their overwhelming thoughts would be i’d be delisted by now if i didn’t have a contract for next year.
again generally agree with your sentiment on this, this time however as the above said, covid is playing a big part in the decision making right now.
I understand the club also being risk averse with giving contracts to injured players.
Like how many players have we had on our list in hindsight been given way too long a contract because of later injury issues Hooker, Daniher, Heppell, Fantasia, Stewart, Gleeson, … the list goes on
And it can be. If the message is “look, we don’t know what’s going on with the cap, we can offer you this $ for one year or this $$ (lower) for 2, have your choice. If you take the 1, and the cap increases and you’ve done the work there’s probably more $$ next year. But if you don’t do the work, or redo the knee or whatever it will be less next year” then fine. But Team Mozzie breeds to have bought in on the decision. If Mozzie thinks the club don’t have faith in him, either his talent, or his commitment, then it is a bad decision and bad management.
