Why? Frankly, the statement is a bit ridiculous if arguing for no penalty (and Hird didn’t do that). The law is almost entirely the reverse. Look at motor vehicle law. The car following that ploughs into the back of the car in front is pretty much always at-fault. Because no matter how ridiculous the front car’s breaking, or swerving, or whatever was, the onus is on the car following to leave enough space to break in time.
Durham can expect that all he wants. But when Cerra clearly hasn’t braced himself, it is Durham’s responsibility to pull out or otherwise stop himself from making a connection to Cerra’s head.
He almost achieves that, but probably failed. Which is why he’ll get some weeks. We just need to argue Durham almost succeeded, made minimal contact, and therefore should have a minimal penalty.
And to be clear if it is from the footage I saw of Hird speaking on this, in that footage Hird did say Durham was at fault. Just that Cerra used bad technique and contributed.
Yeah - but his main point is that Cerra attacked the ball with poor technique still stands and if he entered the contest with his body turned he’d be less likely to get hurt.
Durham can change his ways, but if Cerra doesn’t he may end up concussed again from another hit.
And that there is the problem. people are going to get hurt all the time if they think the duty of care is with the other bloke. Back to the car analogy - you can slow the traffic down all you want, then pedestrians will show less respect for the oncoming car believing it will stop - but sometimes they don’t
He wrote years ago that when he was being courted by Edelsten to go and play for Sydney, he was told by Edelsten that Sheeds was on board as coach. For some reason he then had the ■■■■■ with Sheedy and Essendon, rather than Dr Geoff.
Exactly. Surely Cerra has been coached on the correct way to approach the ball… bomber thompson’s priority with the young players was always to teach them how to be “safe on the field and when going for the ball”
Mostly always comes back to sheedy treating them like the peasants they were and also the fact that Essendon were a serious threat on field (hard as that is to believe these days).
I only like the footy shows where it’s all ex footballers now(like on the couch - even if it’s a bit hawthorn/collingwood/Brisbane centric ). The ones where they have a muppet from a newspaper it’s just painful.
