What were his tackling/1% numbers like? Everyone sees him as an attacking mid for some reason, but I think his biggest asset is the defensive side of his game.
Sure, he has a massive hoof but he is a very good tackler and excellent at creating and splitting marking contests through the midfield. We don’t need to bring in a bloke who will get 30 odd (we have Zaka, Merrett, Hepp, Watson etc; all capable of doing that), we need someone who will lay 10+ tackles and split 5-10 marking contests that otherwise become uncontested inside 50’s. Myers may fill that role (he certainly did in 2013/14) as good as anyone at the moment.
Sunk costs are irrelevant when evaluating the future utility or likely return from a prospective investment. To translate: the fact we’ve sunk 10 years into Myers has nothing to do with assessing his future value.
That said, it’s a mistake made by all AFL clubs particularly with respect to early draft picks - “wait, we sunk a really early draft pick on this guy - better hold onto him for another X years to see if he comes good”.
I think there is a spot on the list for him. Watson, BJ, Hocking, Bird, Stanton and Howlett will most likely all be gone by the end of 2018. Majority probably earlier.
False. The two seasons where he’s played plenty of games - 2013 & 2014 - he couldn’t crack a top 10 B&F finish. In fact, he finished outside the top 20 of the B&F in the season in which he played the most games (2013: 20).
He’s the epitome of everything Essendon 2003-today: underwhelming early round draft pick, overrated based on odd glimpses of talent, and stays on the senior list about 6 years too long.
He’s the random blind kick from a clearance specialist. Seriously tho, I thought he got better as the game wore on. He gives the midfield some badly needed inside help, now he actually needs to give us a month of good football.
