#23 David Myers Retyers

All he needs to do is play the way he has been playing, but not be a liability with disposal.

2 games ago he was still blindly kicking out of contests and turning the ball over by foot.

Last game he sorted that out but had this woeful run of poor disposal by hand (particularly that 3rd quarter).

He is valuable on the inside, just needs to ensure his disposals are to our advantage.

agree. I think his inside bollocking work is underrated but does need to win more of it to advantage.
I suspect his days are numbered regardless with Langford seemingly on the cusp.

It wouldn’t at all surprise me if there was a predetermined match to bring Langford back in if he did everything required of him. It wouldn’t surprise me if this match was it.

But while Langford provides youth and future upside, I’m not convinced he’s a better player than Myers for this Friday night.

there is a page in a book somewhere. it appears we are both on it. :+1:

I agree that Langford may not be the answer this Friday night but seriously your standards arnt great for a senior midfielder if you think he’s been playing okay bar his disposal. He’s been in effective in every game he’s played, his game against west Coast was passable but bar that he’s had absolutely zero influence on the game.

At his peak he averaged 4 clearances a game. But he is hardly attending stoppages in 2017. I hope to see more midfield work from him, otherwise he’s just another hbf. The Riddler might even be better.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing based on a radio interview with Worsfold where when talking about Langford he said something along the lines of “we told him we wanted him to go back (to the vfl) to develop in the midfield for a chunk of games”

It was the ‘chunk of games’ bit that made me think there was a pre-determined amount of time. After the bye seems like an obvious milestone.

One issue is that teams are so good now at setting up for that quick kick out of a clearance. The onus is now on maintaining possession by hand out of contest until you can find someone on the outside.

Dave is a terrible handballer. When he arrived at the club he could not handball on his right, which is pretty unusual for an AFL draftee, let alone a top 10 pick. He’s improved in that regard, but it isn’t instinctive, and and he’s slow to get rid of the ball. His left side handball is okay, but well below AFL midfield standard.

The WB showed last year the value of the handball in beating a high press. Those with substandard handball skills were sent to “handball school” to work on this skill.

This is why I think he isn’t seeing much center square action. While he is able to generate good clearance numbers when given the opportunity, the quality of those clearances are not high. A quick kick out of congestion often ends up sling-shotted back over your head.

I reckon they will persevere with trying to find another position for him for this reason. If not in the seniors, then at VFL level. He’s got two years after this to find a new role. I don’t think his opportunity will come when Watson retires as a center square specialist. The likes of Langford and Parish will get more opportunies then.

two years after this on his contract. wow!

future captain … of the VFL side

And this week’s posts from the Peanut Keyboard Warrior:

Any talk of Essendon making the finals and being capable of beating anyone once there is both ridiculous and stupidly arrogant.

On the bright side with such a bunched ladder, pick no 2 in the next draft is not an impossibility.

Essendon are just as likely to collapse in a sorry heap and finish 17th as they are to make the finals.

Essendon - learning from defeat since 2001.

A choke of South African cricket proportions

Langford is not a mid-fielder’s bootlace.

a line in the sand game. Time for Essendon to make a statement. but … Swans by 50+ points

Still only 2 games from 17th place

EFC reported yesterday he had 24 disposals, 4 marks and 3 tackles yesterday.

VFL stats up now say 32, 5 and 5.

Ooooooooooookay.

Your feeling on which is more accurate?

Now you list them like that, … it starts to stink of troll really …

Gwilty as charged!!!

I don’t think he’s a midfielder

Try him as aforward? I dunno

I personally reckon we won’t see much more of him. I don’t think he’s best 22

At the game I though he was pretty good & had a lot more of the ball than he’s been getting at senior level. 24 would have sounded about right but it can be impossible to see every handball. It didn’t seem a dominant performance & usually somebody getting 30+ stands out more so I’m more inclined to go with mid 20’s. What I did notice was he was more willing to kick than he’s looked in the seniors. Maybe thats because of the slower pace of the games or a confidence thing but at least the hoof is still available.

Slower pace.
Extra half second.

Remember Ben Jolley?

Gun VFL player, nowhere near it at AFL.

State leagues are packed with them.

Honestly I’d be giving games to Langford, Laverde, Mutch or Ridley over Myers.
