He needs to get a few goals in each of his first few games while teams are putting their 3rd best tall defender on him and the defender tries running off him. After that its predictable, the defender will be told to wear him, and if that doesnt work, the 2nd best defender will go to him, and so on until finally they start to double team him. If he is still getting 2 goals a game by that stage, the other forwards will love him, and we will be eying off the top 8.

Seeing as only one player in the league averaged more than two goals last year, this seems like an unreasonable expectation.

Nino it is not really a cop out as Birch was referring to the Essendon game plan and Jones’ greater exposure to it! Wright might surprise or he might not, but we won’t know till the end of the season, everything else is just supposition and not based on anything but assumptions.

nino, best to just sit back and be neutral and wait for the real stuff to start to see where we are really at. Even then, a good/bad start does not necessarily translate for what happens for the rest of the season. Too many known unknowns for us to really know how it’s going to go.

I’m not expecting top 4 or anything but want to see substantial improvement in tackling and applying defensive pressure all over ground and an appetite for the contest

And a more even contest/application throughout a game. The fadeouts during quarters is frustrating and hurts us a lot.

it’s really frustrating especially when we are dominating a team by a couple of goals and then in the next qrt have the oppo staging a comeback and almost pinching the win

Yup. We would surely have to be right up there for most ‘red time’ goals conceded over the past few years.

Bullshit thing is you can see it coming

I lost count the amount times I hear Essendon supporters around me groaning and rolling thier eyes when we concede a red time goal

Also another one I hear is “Here we go again” when the the ball leaves our fwd line the length of the ground without any Essendon players touching the ball
