#23 - Harrison Jones

BZT is more reliable than McKay.

And if he went to Hawthirn we know he will become a pretty good footballer don’t we?

If this the case, what are Essendon doing wrong?

BZT takes the 3rd tall. McKay No 1. Hard to compare. When BZT was given the responsibility last year he was monstered.

Good post. He’s talented. Essendon just doesn’t succeed in realising talent.

but is he anything to what we need as a football team?

It’s always easy to look like a good footballer when you have good footballers around you. Much harder when you are expected to be the player that lifts those around you.

This has been Essendon’s problem for 20 years. We don’t have Hird, Lloyd, Long, Lucas, Mercuri, Fletcher etc which make other players look far better than what they are.

I agree. Does need to be more involved, but some of that has been the wing thing lately (which I liked for a few weeks). I still think a player who can run, has good hands and excepting a small patch mid year usually kicks straight is a good player to have

The problem we have is that Langford, caddy and Jones or all better suited to a roaming half forward role. There isn’t room in the seniors for all of them and it’s possible that it would be preferable to only play one of them. We should therefore look at trading at least one.

I doubt Jones attracts more than a late second a best. Maybe a third

I reckon you could coax Hawks into their first for Langford

I don’t see Caddy, Jones and Langford playing the same role at all

For me, it’s a decision between

Jones v Cox as a high half forward / wing

Wright v Draper as ruck / forward

Langford v Stringer as medium / key forward

You’re on the right track.

Plus caddy? It’s way too tall imo

Sydney run with Grundy, McLean, Amartey, McDonald plus Parker playing as a mid forward

But agreed there is a case for stopping the Jones / Cox wing experiment

But Grundy is a pure ruck so really it’s a 2.5 talls forward line

Same in my example, as Jones and Cox are playing wing / half forward

Durham Caddy ???
??? Wright Langford

Plus Cox/Jones off the bench

I think using them as wingers is a bust so really they are just more tall forwards.

SEH, duursma, Martin, Roberts, Durham all belong on a wing well before either of Cox or Jones

Completely agree.

If cox or Jones are in my team, it’s in the last bench spot

I know people have gone really cold on him, but was just looking at the stats and he still managed to kick 18 goals this year from 21 games. Given that he played the last half of the year on the wing I think thats actually a pretty solid return.
I definitely think if he played the full year as a forward next year we could get 30-35 goals out of him, and Id be happy with that personally.
One thing about Jones is that he is one of the better talls at applying pressure at ground level, which would be good for our forward line.

I Kind of hope Stringer leaves and Jones takes his spot next year in the forward line.

I’d give him the offseason to train as a wingman otherwise what was the point of sending him there and thinking it’d work out of nowhere?

I just think Martin, Roberts, Duurs and Hawli are all so much better wingers.

I like Jones but I can’t shake the concern that he doesn’t look any more likely to kick goals when he plays forward than when he plays wing. His pressure for his size is good but I’m just not sure he can be a good forward until he’s better 1 on 1.
