#25 Jake Stringer (Part 1)

The only thing I want David Kings opinion on is who to bet on for the rising star. He’s got good mail (allegedly)

He’s only 23.
2-3 years of elite pre-season training and he could work his way to a fitness level that will allow him to play for much longer onball. For now he’s a big bodied, short burst, impact player in the middle who spends majority of his time forward. 2-3 goals a game this year and he’ll be an excellent and important addition.

A possibility to win the Coleman.

We’ve got to be patient with this guy. Smith and Saad will have an impact almost immediately. Stringer will take 18-24 months to have a meaningful impact as a midfielder. If this is the plan, we need to hold tough in face of the media firestorm that will result if he’s playing badly in the first few rounds.

Make it tied with Joey and that’s a great outcome.

Robbie Grey is rated the top Midfielder/Forward in the competition.

Here are his stats ( yes, they don’t tell the whole story)
Goals: 47 ( 2 per game)
Disposals : 19
Clearances 2.9
Contested Possessions 9.1
Tackles 2.5

Stringer should perform this well at Essendon. He would just need to sustain it. 3 clearances a game is certainly possible even with his tank as it is.

When the Dogs dumped him, he was still rated 4th best player at the club.

well last year he won the dogs goal kicking from 16 games.
If he can average 1.5 goals a game but spend more time in the middle id be happy with that for this year.
only averaged 12 disposals, if he can increase that to 15-20 disposals per match plus 1-2 goals per game.

Devon smith is also another mid/forward
last year average 18 disposals and just under a goal a game.
We would be looking for 20-25 disposals plus a goal a game each week.
His best year at GWS Was 21 disposals and 1.2 goals a game avg. He has potential to better that

Robbbie Gray 19 disposals and 2 goals per game.

I probably want Devon smith more midfield time this year i guess. And can see Stringer getting to Robbie gray level. Devon smith prolly more of a chance to get to dusty levels than Stringer this year.

FYI Dustin martin 29 disposals and 1.5 goals a game. avg last year.

ASSISTANT COACH REVEALS WHERE STRINGER WILL PLAY TONIGHT
BY SEN 6 HOURS AGO

While Jake Stringer’s potential midfield bursts for Essendon have been the source of much speculation, Mark Harvey expects the former Bulldog to spend at least half of tonight’s clash against Adelaide in the middle.

The Bombers assistant coach says the 23-year-old’s pre-season has been heavily focused on his midfield work, and expects him, alongside their other new recruits, to add greater depth to an area seen as while talented, maybe lacks the depth of some other clubs.

“We’ve trained him in the midfield all summer, so I’d expect him to spend at least 50 percent of his time in there,” Harvey told SEN Breakfast.

“He will spend time forward and mid.

“We would like to have 10-12 players that can rotate through those areas, hence that’s the reason why we went after a player like him, and Devon Smith as an example, to add to our midfield.

“Jake‘s got some serious talent. Hopefully he can fit in within our system, and the way we play, which is a little bit different to the Bulldogs.”

Stringer kicked 27 goals in 2017, following his 56 goal All-Australian season in 2015, and 42 in 2016, and Harvey feels he can be equally damaging when he goes forward, particularly if he isn’t the focus of the opposition’s best defender, which was often the case at the Bulldogs.

“The best part about Jake is when he goes into the forward line he will have some big forwards around him, which might actually take the focus off him, and also help him with his output in their forward line,” he said.

$14 to kick the first goal tonight. Me likey

So Jake is going to run with Sloane? Hopefully gets him across the line for next year. Would be the biggest win of the night if he could.

50-50 ! King doesn’t reckon it will work, but Harvs expects it.

Its a fact of life, Stringer doesn’t have the tank to run 15km in a game like BJ or Stants. But there must be a way to use his strengths in the midfield and not expect him to do what is not equipped to do yet. ( indeed may never be able to do. )

Simple strategy to start with. Stringer to line up on attacking side of stoppages. More defensive mids like Hepp to take the defensive side. Stringer to play mainly just forward of centre when the ball goes down back; BJ, Hepp and Zerret to cover the defensive side if we turn it over or lose the stoppage.

Will that work ?

Stringer/Begley interchanging forward & midfield.

That can’t be right. All the knowledgeable footy commentators say he’s got no defensive side to his game.

is that one of his most complete games?

Nah, just second to the ball a lot…

Pleasing effort

Great start.
Loved beast mode in the centre at the end.

Went missing a bit in the 3rd, not alone in that, but was really good in the last. Seemed to cover alot of ground and provided good support and pressure.
Good first hit out for the season proper.
Can only be happy if he builds from this
