#26 Cale "Thank You Mr" Hooker

#4828

No, you probably couldn’t clearly define the roles of recent years, … but for the 1st half of his Career, it was virtually always Hurls at FB, Hooks at CHB.

The debate raged for some time when he made the spot his own, as to whether he or Sean Wellman were the better/best, … then he was named AA CHB, and the debate just grew.

Pointing out Buddy’s goals on Hooker is not really much of a point, though, because …Buddy is Buddy and kicks goals on everyone.

#4830

Hmmmm, I reckon pears had him at least once in 2009. Happy to be corrected on that and doesn’t invalidate your point anyway.

People forget hooker also used to be a lot quicker, a lot quicker.

Anyway the elephant in the room here is marking. Fletch was a dominant zoning defender before it was a thing but also before intercept marking was really a thing too. Fletch would always spoil in a contest. Hooker goes for his marks, and don’t we love him for it. I suspect this a generational difference as much as anything.

That said Fletcher is my all time favourite Essendon player, bar none. Amazing amazing footballer who could have played anywhere on the field on any opponent and did. That isn’t to say that there weren’t some players who had the better of him on occasion but as a pure footballer who was the whole package Fletcher was a God. And as humble as they come. He’s a legend and criminally underrated in some quarters. I reckon Fletch kept us mid table for a long time when we had no right to be and probably even saved us from a few more wooden spoons.

It’s okay to have an opinion, but it is not ok to make claims that you simply cannot back up. Such as old FF’s wouldn’t kick bags today. You have no way of knowing that, it is just an opinion. So maybe stick with opinion and let it go.

#4832

I always consider the stronger forward as the FF and the more mobile forward as the CHF. Generally Hooker plays on the bigger guy as he is stronger.

#4833

This really is just mind blowing. We’ll probably never ever see another kpd do what Fletcher did. What a privilege it was to watch his whole career.

#4834

Nah, Pears was beating up on Roughead, and Buddy didn’t play the second game that year.

#4835

I said it is very unlikely that they would. Seriously, players are lucky to get to 70 goals these days. There is no way a lead up forward like Dunstall would have kicked 100.

#4836

Fletcher was a much better fullback than Hooker, though Hooker is a great “clunk” mark. However, Fletcher’s career is the ruck has been sorely undervalued. He was our best ever 17 year old school boy playing in his debut in the ruck Essendon has ever had.

Has Hooker ever rucked?

#4837

Yes, he rucked in 09. Was more than handy around the ground too

#4838

Yes, in a final

#4839

Well well, there you go.

I’d day Hooker is a better 'round the ground ruck than Fletcher.

#4840

Again, your opinion, you should not be declaring it as a fact as you simply do not know, it is an assumption. The current game has no true lead up forwards and hasn’t done for a while, coaches do not like them as they want versatility and movement.

#4841

I actually think Hooker would of done pretty well on the gorilla forwards back in the day. I would expect him to match up pretty well with Lockett and dunstall

But he is not in the same postcode as Fletcher. There is no shame in that either, Fletcher was a once in a generation player.

Cale is the best defender we have had since Fletch by a mile

Who would you rather have in your team Hurley or Wellman at their best. Wellman wins it for me

#4842

What sort of icing?

#4843

Better not leave him out in the rain.

#4844

I’d say once in a Lifetime, … possibly even once in an ever.

(In fact technically , … all players are once in an ever, … right  )

#4845

In 2008 Buddy kicked 113 goals for the year. Has not come close since. Buddy would have been 20 at that time.

Keep in mind that Clarkson changed the game forever in the GF that year, with the rolling zone.

#4846

Anyhow, I like Hooker, so neh!

#4847

I’m getting very confused.
Are people saying Hooker is the better full back because we have team defence now?
And if so, how does that work?
