#27 Mason Redman - till end 2028

Good players adjust in any roll they play and more so they do it for the team.

He played poorly this season, one of our worst senior players in fact. Were the rumours true he had enough of footy and wanted back to Adelaide, his footy suggests so, watch the replays of his games, some of his efforts were not AFL standard let alone VFL standard. Has nothing to do with position, it’s to do with attitude.

He needs to find his passion, form, grit, desire and most of all play for the team as a leader of our club because he is in that bracket and needs to lift showing the way for our young brigade in 2025

He clearly wants him to be more accountable as a defensive player and then utilise his ability to attack forward when the opportunity arises.

Mason was shown up a lot this year that when our mids struggle to contain pressure in the middle, he can be a defensive liability.

Don’t think BDB would love that and not necessarily his fault.

People can argue that having Marin back hamstrung his offensive counter attack. It might have, but after 8 years in the system and on a good long term deal, he should have shown more flexibility

He seemed to lose his desire and want when everyone fussed over him leaving. He got heaps of attention, got big contract and then backed off. Im no shrink but appears in cruise control now, and needs to get hungry again… and hes not on his own there. Over to you Dr Phil.

In his best seasons to date (2021-2023), it was about a third absolute blinders, a third solid games, a third poor to complete stinkers.

That’s just what Redman is. Good with the bad. It won’t change, even if he does find his best form again, there will still be some absolute garbage games amongst them.

As soon as something is stated in blitz it becomes fact, 100% certain, until another fact trumps it.

It’s a fair point you raise but just a couple of comments from me:

  • I don’t see Zachs height as an issue at half back. There are plenty of shorter creating players off half back that are facilitators not man on man defenders. If you look at Nick Martin he very rarely jumped in a marking contest or rarely even got caught out defending one on one. His role was to be at the fall of the ball and to create offensively. Zach will do the same, he won’t have to compete one on one in the air because Nick Martin didn’t, my guess without looking at the stats would be that Martin had less intercept marks out of anyone in our defensive 6. His role wasn’t to compete in the air it was to compete at ground level.
  • I also see your point around moving players that are excelling in their position however we do need as a club to start thinking about what our mix looks like from 2026-2028. We also need to be prioritising the development of the players that are meant to take us to the next level. There are examples of elite players all over the comp being moved positions for the betterment of the team. Zorko being moved out of the mid-forward role to half back was a huge gain for Brisbane, hawthorn have thrown scicily forward with success at times, mitch Duncan was moved out of the midfield for Holmes, Ollie wines was moved out of his midfield role for JHF. Given Nick Martin finished so high in the b&f it’s clear that the club thinks he can play that role very well. But I feel like the consensus on here is that he would still be better moved forward of the footy. I just don’t agree that because someone is playing their role very well in one position that they should 100% stay there. Bigger picture of total team.

I don’t see the risk in trialing it. Zach could do some pre-season training at half back to fully understand the role which gives us the flexibility to trial that down the track. He hasn’t yet shown that he can shake a tag either and until we get a more balanced midfield he will continue to get that tag. May as well find some flexibility, even if it just means when he gets a tag he moves to half back and plays the Nick Martin role.

Anyways that’s my ramble

Think you’ll find that Red Dog would NOT want to be moved to a permanent forward role!
