#3 Darcy "Darcy Parish" Parish - Shiel can play forward pocket instead

is a tall midfielder really worth it if they’re ■■■■?

When we start smashing all these pretenders, our 180cm Midfield Brigade will be the new prototype.

He was poor. He wasn’t by himself being poor.

You bring up Langford who was also mostly rubbish. Totally agreed. But they can move him forward, and they did with a little, just a tiny bit of success. Darcy in my opinion does not have a secondary trick that he has shown. Compare him against our mid rotation blokes.
Heppell - skipper, not going anywhere. Strong in clearances.
Smith, brings manic tackling, can go forward
Shiel - Smooth mover pure mid, better than Parish
Merrett - Elite skills midfielder, better than Parish (Merrett needs to learn how to kick more goals but thats a debate for another day - if he can do that, he will be top of the tree in league type mid)
Zaka - can hit the scoreboard. maybe Parish can take that spot
Langford - Can go forward
Stringer, clearance specialist, can be elite up forward
Myers - clearances - maybe Parish can take that spot
Tippa - midfield cameos. elite pressure
Fantasia - elite small forward
McGrath - High athleticism can run all day
Guelfi - can play behind the ball. Parish is a better mid though.

If Parish can contribute solely as a midfielder better than our pure mids then he deserves to be there. Evidence of two JLT suggests that he couldn’t or at least didn’t. His game yesterday suggest that he has capacity to hit the scoreboard. Fantastic - lets see more of that and hopefully for his sake he can displace one of the blokes above.

But if we are going anywhere as a team, we can’t be accepting that the JLT form that Parish showed is good enough. It wasn’t, and coaches evidently agreed as he is not playing this arvo.

Its conventional wisdom, I believe that’s why they picked the team that way and left Parish out, however, that’s not to say its the only way to pick the team. So who do you leave out for Darcy? Langford, Zaharakis or Myers?
That probably depends if you are in the Langford camp, the Darcy camp or the would the antiMyers / anti Zaka camp hold sway if they replaced Woosha, Skippy and Harves on the match committee

This year will be different. Merret won’t need to fall back behind the ball as much as he is used to. He knows how to kick goals. But he needs to be within kicking distance to do it.

Yep, Merrett actually has great instincts around goal - reckon given time and opportunity he can really elevate this part of his game.

does he do much forward?

he’d need to most improve again to be keeping his spot imo

imo parish does more for quality clearances than these guy.

hope so, when he first started I remember him kicking his first 10 or so goals without missing including a ridiculous dribble from the boundary on anzac day! He has said he wants to kick more goals too.
Being lined up in forward pocket today means he will be close to the big sticks haha … lets see how long he stays up there!!

but a goal a game isn’t beyond a guy with his talent and skill

Except he just showed that he can. I get the criticism of Parish but a lot of it is way over the top. While Langford was battling to get into this side (and didn’t do much forward whenever there in the VFL), Parish was there and doing a reasonable job. He needs to lift to another level no doubt, but he can and he is being written off far too easily.

Laverde and Parish are sitting at 23 & 24 on the list right now. An injury of drop in form to any mid or forward and they are playing.

Great, and that is my point. If Parish can bring goal kicking to his armoury, then fantastic - he has added a new trick that compels him to be selected and he has displaced the next bloke by bringing something to the team that wasn’t there previously.
Then that bloke who was dropped needs to elevate his game to displace someone else.
I would be rapt if our competition for spots was that strong each week.

Haven’t read a lot of posts here writing off Parish, if any… I have read a lot of ‘he’s not quite there yet BUT I reckon he can still make it.’

Some here are reading anything less than ‘he’s a gun’ as ‘he’s sh#t’. Reckon we need to curb some of the outrage here when there’s the slightest well-intentioned criticism of Parish.

You haven’t read very well then.

Fark me there is a distinct lack of football knowledge, and a lot of blow smoke up the ■■■■ of my favourite, in here.

What are you talking about?

Langford played predominantly midfield at VFL level but was still kicking goals!

Nah, I’ve read… just not easily triggered by a throwaway post about what he might be worth in a trade. Someone wants to play fantasy footy… good luck to him, big deal…

Overnight turns into our best player.

Maybe he’s fortunate he didn’t play today at least he can’t be blamed for the loss.

Woosha has ruined this kid.

Pure mid. Just play him there.
