#4 Kyle Langford — not our worst in possibly our worst

WILL
PLAY
THIS
WEEK

You reckon he can replace 2 blokes?

wasnt the point I was making mate.

Sadly, he probably could.

Whens he out of contract this year or next.

um - he’d be having a pretty good game to match their joint efforts. but I expect more from the Langford, If he’s the next Jobe he’s gotta aim much higher (unless he’s the current “utility” Jobe…).

If he is going to be Jobe Backup, he has to be able to average 4.8+ good clearances a game. ( thats what Jobe is averaging in 2017, compared with his peak season average of 7) To get anywhere near this he has to go in hard at the contest. Needs to bring out his “hungry animal” or , if he doesnt have it he needs to develop it.

Bring
Him
The
Funk
In.

Another big game in the middle and I think we will see him back in the seniors with some confidence and a touch of desperation.

People need to lower their expectations just a little. I fear that there is too much belief that this guy is the second coming. His stats are simply not that brilliant to justify the hype Blitz is giving him. Now I am not saying that I don’t like what I see, i think there is plenty to work with but, he is a long way from being an AFL game buster.

An improved and improving contribution is all I am looking for. I think we’ll get that when his next moment comes.

Definately over hyped on blitz at the moment.

It seems that the longer Langford is out of the side at AFL level, the better a player he is.

Strange how absence makes the heart fonder, and the passage of time plays tricks with the memory.

Hehe. Love how he gets canned when he’s playing, and hyped when he’s not.

It’s the same with Laverde

Do have to remember this is the first year he has played full time midfield.

Didn’t as a junior. Has put on heaps of weight since coming to club which would have taken some getting used to also.

Now getting a lot of centre square time in 2’s, as well as still being rotated fwd.

He’s copped more flack then accolades on here since he was drafted and played a good month of footy in the 2’s in the position we want him to play. One of the least hyped young players on our list and deserves another crack at it.

Although The Langford was impressive in the Twos last Saturday it’s worth remembering that this was against a very mediocre VFL outfit.
If he can repeat that performance against the Doggies, who play a much more AFL type midfield game, then I think we can legitimately expect to see him in the midfield against the Swans and/or Bears after the bye.
Their midfield line ups are also possibly more suited to Langfords strengths as a big-bodied mid, who moves smoothly rather than with explosive pace.

Whose percentage we managed to improve by about 6 points.

Langford ready for centre stage

Kyle Langford is expected to line-up predominantly in the midfield when he runs out to take on the Swans on Friday night.

The 20 year old was recalled to the team alongside Shaun McKernan to replace the injured Cale Hooker and David Myers.

Langford played the opening four matches of the season in the AFL before being sent back to the VFL to develop his midfield game.

He has averaged 25 disposals, six marks and seven tackles per game at VFL level this season.

“He’ll still get some time through the forward line but we’re building him up and giving him big opportunities to build his ability to play as a midfielder,” Essendon Coach John Worsfold said.

“That was the idea of having him back in the VFL – he’ll get a lot quicker development and ability to come back into the side and spend time in the midfield.

“We know he can play well forward and contribute there.

“It has been more about building him as a midfielder and he’s coming along really well.”

McKernan’s call up also comes on the back of sustained good form at VFL level.

The versatile big man kicked four goals in his last start against Footscray and has kicked 15 goals for the season.

“With Matthew Leuenberger being back in the VFL team, it’s meant that Shaun has been able to play pretty much solely as a key forward and he has been in outstanding form there taking a lot of marks and kicking goals,” Worsfold said.

“We really want him to come in and give us that presence up in the forward line as another tall player.

“[Joe] Daniher and [James] Stewart are working really well together so they’ll guide him in his role.

“He may do a little bit of ruck work but in general we want him to impact the game as a key forward.”

The Bombers are in eighth spot on the ladder and face a Sydney outfit that has won five of its last six matches.

“They’ve been in very good form, leading the competition in a number of areas so they’re going to be a great test for us and one that we should be excited about,” Worsfold said.
