so you don’t like the non support of an efc player, but then you go on to not support him by admitting he’s been no good lately, so by default you don’t admire your own view, cos if you truely wanted to support him, you’d pump him up, not admit to a truth.
There’s out of form - dropping a mark, losing a contest , poor decision errors - and then there’s something else. Over recent weeks, Ben has looked like he doesn’t want to go to the ball. There was a moment against Brisbane where the ball was bobbling at his feet and he couldn’t decide if he really wanted to pick it up. Like a cricketer that drops a catch or two and then hopes the ball doesn’t come anywhere near him. It’s a tough watch , and I hope he finds some clarity and composure of mind.
Ease up old fella - @Tids was simply saying the way Essendon fans boo or Bronx cheer our own players at actual matches is shthouse. And that’s correct.
Nothing about calling out poor form in conversation, at selection, or on a forum etc.
I’ve been that guy before, and man, is that a bad place to be mentally.
“Please don’t hit me a catch, please dont hit me a catch…” And sure enough, while that thought is flowing through your head, a catch will come your way.
I was a young fella at the West Coast game where big Fish copped the wrath of bombers fans and it made a lasting impression on me. I get that the footy is an outlet for people, an opportunity to vent all that pent up angst generated over the week. I just wish our supporter base wouldn’t funnel all their frustration towards the team into a single whipping boy. Stants was another who copped it unfairly IMO. I’d almost rather the English model of booing the whole team at the final siren, rather than bronxing a player during the game.
Id also note is not unique to Essendon supporters. Sitting with my wife’s StKilda supporting family in the 2000’s I would hear some extraordinary stuff directed at Raph Clarke.
Anyway, hope the boy goes well out of the spotlight. There’s a good redemption story available to him if he can get his head sorted.
That the game he kicked 1.7, including a poster from 2m out? You could see he ws ■■■■■■■■ himself lining up by the end of the game. Think he kicked like 1.4 the week before or after as well.
I hated what our “supporters” did to Salmon. Was our best player pre 93, then wanted out shortly after.
That WC H&A 1993 MCG game was a pivotal moment in the season.
Ladder was bunched up.
Sheeds said in the doco that if we lose that game, he doesn’t believe we win the Flag that year.
His reaction after the final siren tells everything about its significance.
Salmon (who has a terrific sense of humour) said after receiving the free kick that a senior player was supportive (O’Donnell ?), and Mark Harvey was less supportive, threatening violence if he didn’t convert.
They then cut to Harvs who agreed with the above.
Edit…the booing game being referred to in the post you quoted was Week 1 Finals 1995.
