#32 - Ben McKay

He did all that you’d want from him, and that is compete and provide a contest. But, whoever is coach next season needs to work with him and get him back playing in defence with confidence. An in-form Ben McKay in defence tonight and we win that game. The frees that Blakiston and Langford, who are not defenders by trade, gave away that led to goals against don’t happen if he’s back there.

He was great. Playing forward has set him free. All he has to do is see ball get ball. The thing I loved the most was, he kept presenting and contesting all night. All we need is smart players at his feet. He always gets the ball to ground in front of him

Really liked that he seemed happier playing too.

Did well in the role I thought.

he took some very good marks inside 50. that’s a great base to build on. very cale hookerish. you get the good the bad and the terrible in the same game . leave him there . he’s going to take marks , so get him working his butt off on set shot routine , get the psych into his head , whatever you need because he can take a mark

clunked it well, a good game by the big bloke.

5 marks inside 50, 2 goals and didn’t let them take an intercept down the line all night. Happy he’s been able to find form, credit to Solly and Ben for persevering in tough times.

Where does he play if all our forwards are fit?

That’s a trick question btw. They will never all be fit at the same time.

Getting Cale Hooker forward vibes. Loves a podcast too.

He will get moved back soon enough, we can’t play Blakiston much longer and his confidence has really improved. Even if we just move him back for a quarter or two

Problem is, Edwards and Gerryn are forwards. We will probably have to send him back as we need defenders atm.

We’re tanking so send him down back, next minute we’re a chance to win…so we send our other defender forward…

Playing forward forces him to be involved and make the game and not lose concentration down back and be invisible. He was really good last night.

So, I like this whole McKay forward thing

He’s now looking like a bargain if he can essentially play forward and back and impose himself like that.

Great coaching, it’s completely freed him up mentally and he is having fun.

Ridley is due back, isn’t he?

I like it, like others said this looks to have freed him up. Playing with more intensity and aggression. As a defender seemed to play so careful.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I was proud of him last night.

Whether it’s sustainable or not, he needs to be confident on field.

This was a good move.

It took Solomon one week to fix McKay.
