#32 - Ben McKay

Surely the bloke is done with AFL.

If there was any game to play him, this was the game.

They got McKay because of Tom Hawkins. Plain and Simple. Then Hawkins got injured in the only game he could have played against us and retired later that year. So Benny never even got the match up we traded him for.

The fact that he wasn’t selected last night, against that forward line, adds credence to suggestions he is struggling mentally.

Solly publicly said McKay (currently) lacks the confidence to play AFL.
Think it’s a bit more robust than a suggestion he is struggling mentally.

Talk him into taking early retirement

And if he won’t, pay him out and get rid

I’m hopeful a new coach will restore his self confidence after he has had a good rest over the break period.

He has a rough season but surely the talent is still there. It needs a combination of self belief and support from the new head coach to restore him to his previous self - that is a good shut down defender against key opposition forwards.

Wouldn’t be shocked if he and the club come to an agreement at the end of the season and he retires.

If I was him I’d be trying to get to a better team. We’ve seen how much better his brother is going at Carlton mentally since they changed coach. Ben has only ever known North and Essendon; two teams who’ve (mostly) had crap coaches, crap performances, and heaps of pressure throughout his career.

Before throwing it all away I’d hope for his sake he tries to see if he can get a gig at a better team where he might find footy not as hard on him mentally as it has no doubt been at these basket cases.

Scott is a career killer.

So many players left with zero confidence.

I’d be ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  off to be honest. Has taken the well paid years on his contract and can sit in the VFL for the next 2 years.

This is what people don’t get. This club destroys careers. Voss and D’Ambrosio would both be on the scrap heap now if they remained at this god aweful club.

Thing is we need to be better. Reid needs help. Ridley gone. We need two key defenders every week. No one else is there? Is Sellars a key defender?

Having a chuckle at how many people are retiring Mckay. His last chance to make anything of his career is via the new coach.

He has made a mint off us so my sympathy is lacking vs the performance we have gotten from him.

Sellers would be a great option to pick up in the Rookie Draft.

I’d think Sellers may lack the athleticism required to impact at AFL level but certainly couldn’t be any worse than McKay.

I’ve been impressed with what Kalpakis has delivered as a mid season recruit.

Can’t see him not giving the new coach (whomever this mysterious messiah is) a go before he made a call, if it all.

I’d be surprised if the new coach decided to let him go.

From what I’ve heard, there’s a big chance he’ll retire this year. I heard he was close to retiring last year. I don’t think he enjoys football any more.

Isn’t he signed until the end of 2029? Since when has any club ever retired a player and paid out 3 years worth of contract?

Plus his contract is reportedly very low for the next 3 years in terms of salary cap space so why would we trade him? No other club is going to give up a meaningful draft pick.

Let him prove himself next year under a new coach and structure, otherwise he sits in the vfl
