#32 - Ben McKay

Essendon denied the report to Morris, he stuck with it.
Cal also said it so it makes me think, alongside Morris essentially saying it, that McKay’s manager is making these claims to try and push something.

Yep sounds like it, screw the manager if so.

I think it will be both

Good. Either trade him or delist him but he cannot under any circumstances be on our list next year.

This all assumes, of course, that without the McKay payout we wouldn’t otherwise be paying above 95% of the cap next year.

I would rather we pay him out next year. If the reports are true that his contract was heavily front-ended, it would mean paying out around $1.2–$1.3m. The salary cap in 2027 is $18.44m, so his total payout would represent roughly 7% of the cap.

With the 95% minimum spend, McKay’s additional payout relating to 2028 and 2029 would effectively account for less than the 5% we otherwise have available, assuming we were only going to pay 95%.

Another way of looking at it is that paying him out helps get us to the 95% minimum without having to overpay some of our middle-of-the-road, going-nowhere players just to meet the required spend.

There’s effectively no difference for 2027 if we pay him out, because we have to spend at least 95% of the cap anyway.

I also don’t think banking the savings matters much in this situation. By paying him out now and removing his contract from the books, we are effectively pushing that cap flexibility into future years anyway.

We should pick him the fark up as soon as possible as fark.

Gresham was on $700k this year. McKay on a $1m, dropping to $400k year. That alone is $1.1m which is more than enough to accommodate the payout.

Ben will leave a massive legacy when he leaves Essendon which will be really hard to fill for the club. I mean he just will.

Red Rock Deli will pull their pending club sponsorship.

Those barracking for him to leave, don’t get too excited yet. Might end up costing more to move him on than it would to keep him.

he only takes one list spot right so should be okay yeah?

I suspect the story is to force his hand in asking for a trade. No way they are paying out three years of his contract.

a few weeks later….

How?

Played reasonably when his front loaded pay was over 1 mil. When playing for much reduced money, he played worse than a guy we got from Brisbane for peanuts. Coincidence?

Or was it a 2 year drop in form/ chronic soreness. Who knows.

Surely we can convince Carlton to pick up his minimum wage contract to keep him as a stable pony for the brother?

Ill believe that when Tom Morris contacts the club for comment on something like this, and instead of denying it in the hope of getting pick 72 we just say “yeh, what of it?”

Have we eve had a player reach the end of a front loaded deal without falling off a cliff or wanting out?
