#34 Jake Long - you’re cut, so long

I thought Gleeson, Bags, Dea & Hepp were all serviceable today, and Walla did what he could.

Bags was directly responsible for a hell of a lot of goals. All he has these days is 100% commitment and hardness, because he’s 1 on 1 stuff now is deadset ordinary

Remember Bags looked miles off it last year during the pre-season cup, but looked a lot better when the real stuff started. But that’s hardly surprising; as any good AFL fantasy coach knows you can’t judge an established players form based on the pre-season cup. It’s great to get a look at the kids and outliers who have something to prove. But many established players openly state that they don’t get out of second gear and their only aim during the pre-season cup is to get through unscathed. It’s a Micky mouse competition - I wouldn’t have a clue who won it last season. It’s forgotten about come round 1.

Long is playing his role perfectly. Occupying a list spot we can use for a draftee at the end of the year.

He’s been playing that for about three years.

Longy looked cooked when having to participate in a few contests in succession.

I’m not sure why Jake was playing, he’d only just resumed training after an injury lay off.

I would have thought Guelfi, Clarke or McNiece would have been more ready for a hit out.

Wasn’t it more like:

  • Imploded as a player during the JLT and looked a shell of his former self.

  • Was woeful for the first 10 or so games of the actual season.

  • The team played ■■■■ poor for a few games and he played at a slightly above average during that period.

  • And then finally imploded again for the remainder of the season.

There is a reason we score a lot and concede a hell of a lot and a fair bit has to do with have having Bags in our backline.

He was really poor last year after finally showing something in 2016. He’s going backwards and I’d be stunned if he played any games this year. Has the pace but in’t quite hard enough or composed enough.

Working on the principle that a good big man will always beat a good little man, I would have put Long on Short.

And at least he provided a highlight when he cleverly lured that idiot umpire into giving stupidest decision of the year to date, when he tapped the ball gently and it went over the fence.

I reckon Long is one of the luckiest in the AFL to be on a senior list.
He’s on a 1 year deal so very flexible in terms of list management. Thus is why he’s on the senior list (for the most part).

Did anyone else think WTF when he got a free against for time wasting?

I was quite hopeful after his senior performances at the end of 2016, as I’d seen real progress in the areas of his game that concerned me. I then eagerly watched him in the VFL finals that followed our ‘16 AFL exit and was immediately disheartened - he went straight backwards to where he was prior.

Yeah, bullshiit.
When our mids drop the ball he runs around like a blue-arsed fly trying to get everywhere to fill the gaps.
