It’s great to see him getting a start in the reserves. Last year after the MS draft we had no choice but to throw our draftees to the wolves in the seniors. Very tough gig and they did remarkably well considering. Let’s give Jaxon a chance to get his feet before blooding him. A very un-Essendon thing to do!

Apart from last year we haven’t rushed mid season picks into the senior side.
Traditionally fans have criticised the coaches for not playing the kids
Other teams have (or will this week) have debuted at least 6-8 midseason draftees already.

Yes, but in both of your previous posts you referenced that other teams have debuted msd picks and we still haven’t. As if we somehow erred in not doing so.
Apologies if that wasn’t your intent.
First one was more bemoaning the fact that our draftee was injured and couldn’t play.
The second was pointing out that playing a draftee straight away was not out of line with what other clubs are doing (so not just an Essendon thing).
Fair enough.
But I suspect that most of the half dozen msd guys who have or are about to debut managed to get at least one state / VFL game with the new club before a senior call up. Artemis couldn’t even train until this week.
And in some ways he’s probably arrived at an awkward time. Lots of guys are scheduled to return from injury across the AFL bye weekend.
Hopefully he has a good outing with the VFL first up.

He was picked as a long term prospect on an 18 month contract and not to fill a short term need, so no rush for him to play seniors yet. I suspect with Merrett putting in more time behind the ball, he may have to bide his time.

Artemis on VFL watch for tomorrow with Robert’s injury.
Assume they will give SEH first crack, but a big game tomorrow from the newbie, might get him an early debut.

All of our mid-season picks played Essendon VFL before they played AFL last year. McMahon played for us in VFL rounds 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, and 16 before playing AFL. May and Blakiston played in VFL round 11 before going up to AFL. Smartt was, of course, with us all season, but after the mid-season draft he played VFL round 10, 11, 12, and 15 before playing AFL.

Didn’t catch the VFL game today, but see that Artemis had 16 disposals at 88 per cent. How did he look?
