Yes, we need to move past him, like the majority of the list. However, he’s contracted for next year. Who’d you play in his spot after paying him out? Can’t replace half the list in one off season.
The guy who’s played in his spot every week of his career that he’s been out injured?
You can argue whether he’s a D grader or a C grader but bottom line is he’s 28, often injured, and certainly no better than C grade. Pending other list moves, I’d be happy to see him paid out.
Swied or huss or Unwin or a guy who i think would be great in the forward line would be Nguyen but i wouldnt risk moving him when he is doing well in the backline unless the plan was keep mcgrath in that spot and move Nguyen foward
Yeah, fair enough. I guess I’m just saying that he’s capable of playing a role in a position where we don’t have any depth and he possesses defensive traits that we lack as a team (tackles hard, smothers, 1%'), so he’d not be one to pay out for me. Next year, sure move him on, unless he pulls out an exceptional season.
i think it was bad list management to give him two years when one year would have been enough and now we are tight on list spots.
i dont disagree that he does good things in game but he doesnt do enough or play enough and if we want to move forward as a side these senior guys need to go, and with that youd hope they have a chat to him and say maybe find a new home and facilitate it for a very late pick.
Personally I’d be delisting/trading more than enough players not to have to cut him this year, and have him as a 2026 delisting.
We need to look at any offers we get for our long list of spuds.
Hobbs? Most expect him to be gone to! ![]()
That said, I don’t think replacing his current level of performance will be too hard. Unwin, El Achkar, SEH, if we drafted NHH, lots of options.
Pay him out? Interesting take. I guess if we’re going complete scorched earth policy it’s an option.
Absolutely should be scorched earth policy. And there should be a few others paid out and farked off.
Tony Jones suggesting that Matt Guelfi should put his hand up to captain twice in a 30 second interview is all kinds of wrong.
The responsibility of juggling end of season captaincy with regular season captaincy may be too much of a burden

ANNOUNCE. when blitz cries he can provide us with ample soft tissues
Make it so
Is Tony Jones @donnington? He would definitely give us the best looking captain in the AFL.
Guelf in a contract year coming of hamstring surgery 2025 pre-season and has struggled to make a significant impact when he did finally return. I have always regarded him a depth player for the most part even after 2022 when he came third in the BnF which I thought was more of an indictment on our available talent. He did have some excellent games where he done a decent defensive job on someone and managed to snag a few here and there and I don’t think many would question his effort in general.
Does Guelf have any chance of getting a contract renewal? Does it come down to Gresham contract being renewed? Can Guelf stay injury free and provide good depth?
As an important aside I was reading the Mongrel Punt (not an Essendon supporter,) the other day and he mentioned donating to Alexis in his review of the EssvRich simulation who has set up her own page for World's Greatest Shave - Alexis M
I realise Guelf painting his fingernails in 2024 and waving them when he got a goal (even though dumbass commentators didn’t know initially what it meant- an indictment on them and Essendon who should have made all media outlets aware,) and the clubs support, videos and coverage helped raise a lot of money for Challenge over the years.
Unfortunately Alexis’s Leukaemia has returned but she has her own page to raise some money and I see she is about $1300 off getting to 10k which would be a magnificent achievement for a young girl and hopefully put a smile on her face if she got that goal. I understand a lot of people have family and friends battling with their own issues but if you’ve got a bit of spare coin at the end of the week it’s certainly a worthwhile cause.
Does Guelf have any chance of getting a contract renewal?
No
He’d barely get a game anywhere. Maybe norf
Quality human, but the definition of a list clogger
Guelfi is a handy player without ever being a star. He is like many players over the years who contribute but are on the fringe of selection. (Howlett springs to mind.) All teams have them, and all teams need them. Not everyone is a star. Guelfi has always been a gutsy hard competitor who gives his all. In his late 20s and coming out of contract, he could well find himself delisted at the end of the year, but to denigrate him as a list clogger is harsh. You could say that about every player that is around the 18-30 mark as far as best 23 goes (unless they are a youthful up and comer).
Yep, he will be the 2026 Laverde. We need him because there is no one else.
Guelfi has had a decent career in terms of time so im sure he would want to play longer but its still a good effort.
