#37 - Nic Martin - all of the injury extension

Agreed 100%

I see pics of Hawli training today, still a while to go in his recovery, but perhaps we might get some of this structure this year.

Without change we are basically stuck behind a developmental wall and need to break through it as a team to climb the ladder again.

He ran 15.8kms last week top 5 in AFL.

Our wings should be Nic Martin and Xavier Duursma.

Simples.

Duursma and Jones.

Martin is a HFF I don’t want to see him taking a kick anywhere near the defensive half of the ground ever again

Can’t Nic cover both wings?

Martin offensive winger, Duursma defensive.

Kicked his goals playing wing last week.

I’d have him rotating between wing and HF though.
Jones/Duursma/Martin rotating between wing/HF/Bench when a rest is needed.

I guess the luxury of being able to role and rotate multiple guys through Deep forward, Half forward and wing would help keep things interesting and difficult to coach against. It could help draw defenders out of position and drag wingman to deep forward.

Also builds more depth and resilience resilience in the playing group so we don’t become as reliant on Duursma

Will play forward tomorrow night, I think given our problems and his goal spree last week in less than half a game up there it’s a no brainer

Robert’s doesn’t seem to be that great a kick.

But here is a simple alternative; get Cummings from GWS.

Or if they wanted that unaccountable good kick off HB, why did they stop playing Mass?

His not an elite kick but its certainly not awful

Would like Cummings to be picked up as well would fit in our list nicely

I had since dees mates talking about them being into dan Houston. But sure how gettable either Cummings or Houston are tbh. Either would be good for us.

defies logic why he isnt playing forward. Forget GPS numbers and kicking efficiency, etc. Its clear he needs to be forward of center. Adds a different dynamic to that slow and tired forward line.

Cummings is a UFA so can’t be being paid that much. A big contract should sway him.

Soft tissue issues this year for cumming surely a concern. Please tell me we aren’t going to offer him a stupid long deal

The hardest thing to understand about it all is, before the first game, scott said in the pre game interview that martin is very good defensively so they aren’t worried about throwing him down back.

that’s been one of the biggest lies of the season so far. He is an attacking player, he is always in attacking positions while defending, he runs off opponents and gets forward a lot, he is often left ball watching 20 meters infront of his opponents and when the opposition win it, his man is out the back in space.

If he could defend like mcgrath does while sticking close to his man, you could buy the teething pains, for the most part, that this move is causing.
But he has very little defensive aspect to his game, and you’ve stuck him in the backline and as others have said actually lessened his impact on games as he’s trying risky kicks all the time to try and create something, instead of doing the mundane very well.

While Nick has got a big wing span, it isn’t quite that big.

I have a theory about Martin’s kicking in the forward line, but no way of being able to test the theory. I believe Nick’s kicks in the forward line hot more targets more often than his kicks out of defence, but more than that he is more willing to bite off more difficult kicks in the forward line, and is able to hit up forwards.
