#38 - Rhys Unwin

I liked that little highlight reel. Again i like his kicking action. Thats 4 from 4. Good power and punch in his kick for a smaller guy. Good zip. Happy with this

Good left foot too

That is very impressive for Cobden.

Our very own Ginnivan / Weightman. Watch the opposition supporter melts when this kid starts getting free kicks… Oh that’s right, he plays for us, as you were.

Fcken eh!

Both his finishing and kicking are areas of improvement according to Rookie me Central. So, some patience might be required.

Plays like Gulden… wow… centre clearance stuff for a player with small frame was really good. Even when his team was getting bashed up, it was one and only man standing stuff.

He was made to wait but it was all worth it when Cobden’s Rhys Unwinheard his name called on night two of the 2024 AFL draft.

Realising a childhood dream, the 18-year-old Greater Western Victoria Rebel was “over the moon” when Essendon took him with pick 61 on Thursday, November 21.

The Cobden Football Netball Club cheers as young talent Rhys Unwin arrives at the club after being drafted to Essendon in the 2024 AFL draft.

The live wire small-forward, who watched the draft at home with family, was worried he might miss out as the night drew on.

“When the pick actually came up I started looking around and started thinking about wandering off to be honest,” he told The Standard.

*"*I wasn’t even looking at the telly when it got called out. I didn’t know who picked me up at the time. Everyone went off when they heard my name and I had to look up and see it was Essendon.

“It’s everything. It means so much to me. It’s always been a dream of mine and for it to finally happen it’s unbelievable, I can’t believe it.”

Hometown support

Just as Unwin was celebrating, so too was his home club Cobden.

The club’s rooms, situated in the heart of the small Western District town, were packed with players and supporters for the occasion.

Cheers erupted as it was announced another one of their own was off to the top level and it wasn’t long before Unwin arrived to a hero’s reception.

The Essendon theme song blared over the speakers as he was cheered and embraced by all those who played a part in his journey.

“It’s so cool, it takes me by no surprise,” the left-footed Unwin said of his home club’s reaction.

"The Cobden footy club have been so good to me since I’ve been here and since day one they’ve been nothing short of outstanding.

“It doesn’t shock me all the turnout they’ve got here because they’re so good to me and I can’t thank them enough.”

Cobden - which just like Essendon wears red and black and is known as the Bombers - boasts an impressive list of AFL exports in recent history.

I wish I could, mr paywall

Bugger me, an Unwin in Cobden, there you go.

Pretty sure I went to school with his dad (Brett?) in Camperdown, so I’ll be barracking that extra bit harder for the lad.

Go hard son. Hope you continue to be that annoying small forward that the clip shows you to be and we all get to love the hate that is piled upon you by the opposition.

Most of his highlights is getting free kicks.

That’ll change with us

He kept putting in, fighting, and that is always a good sign when your team is getting pantsed. Gutsy effort, the type we need.

Given the last half of our year, this is a good trait to have. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going is a culture long suppressed at Essendon.

A small few current players have it, but let’s hope the main body of the Essendon culture of mediocrity doesn’t dampen the ‘never say die’ spirit of Unwin.

Bacchus Marsh is doing OK, two number one draft picks in the last three years, Sam Lalor and Aaron Cadman. Liam Duggan and Zak Butters go ok as well.

I have watched all these boys from Junior footy, and while Zak Butters always looked something special, this Lalor kid could be the best of the lot.

Watching the noobs videos with this thought I came away actually fairly happy with his kicking. Looked to be able to make difficult kicks to me. It might just be that he sometimes takes on too much, because he looks capable by foot??

I’m just quoting RMC, who presumably have seen a lot more of his work across the season. I assume @noobermensch’s only has 1-2 videos on him, so a sample of 1-2 games. That said, one is the grand final (I think?) which would imply he might have improved across the season.

No, for sure. Just saying I didn’t see any massive technical flaws, so hopefully any deficiency is easily fixable.

Cadman and butters are from Darley not Bacchus Marsh…

Think his decision-making needs a bit of work but there’s something about the boy to like

Yep they played junior Footy for Darley, but it is all Bacchus Marsh, and we claim them all !!!

Actually used to be three Footy Clubs in the Marsh; Darley, Maddingley and Bacchus Marsh. Darley wears Collingwood jumper, Bacchus Marsh Tigers wore Richmond and Maddingley Spiders the Bombers jumpers. Bacchus Marsh and Maddingley merged in 1978.

Now they are the Bacchus Marsh Cobras and the jumper looks like this
