#40 - Zak Johnson

Tell that to Clayton Oliver, Oscar Allen, Will Day, Taranto, rowbottom etc.

Held of them not in draft calculations when they were 17.

Zak Johnson is almost a year - 11 months - younger than Jaga Smith. That’s not insignificant at 17/18 years of age.

I would still play him this week.

As a parent of a very late December child that is decent at their chosen sport the disadvantage is real, especially at trials for higher level comps.

Edit. Which is pretty much what you said on your next post but backed up with data and explained better. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’d call that difference substantial. The average number of players drafted in the first 2 months of the year is 363. The last 2 months? 223. I doubt that’s coincidence. There’s a reason. If this isn’t due to a development advantage, then how can it be explained?

Might be other stuff at play. Would certainly seem, though, that if you’re good enough to get drafted through the national draft despite the apparent disadvantage of being born in December, you must have something going for you.

Ah, October, that’s the problem, no good kicks born in October

There is not an even distribution of births across the year. The least popular birth month of the year is December.

I stand corrected. Glad I kinda saved grace by stating that there could be other stuff at play 'cos there was.

I didn’t crunch the numbers but the month of birth among the general populace seemed pretty consistent with the number of players drafted by month when you consider the table at the bottom:
3301.0 - Births, Australia, 2016).

Maybe @Heppelltitis was right when they said it was a factor, but not a significant one.

That wasn’t aggression. That was being bone headed.

Well, this interested me so I googled, the month with the least births is February, and the day with the least births is Feb 29th. Kinda makes sense.

I believe the data you’re getting is from the US. According to ABS in Australia December is least popoular, despite having three more days than Feb.

Interestingly (for some), the seasonality of births is regionally dependent. Here’s a heat map showing births indexed by month, separated by region.

In the Northern states Feb is actually quite a popular month to be born.

Most popular is September 9 months after Christmas / new years.

My maths teacher at St Kilda had previously taught at Parade, and he referred to it as such.
