Johnson kicks a pretty hard flat ball. Essington players have excelled in kicking high floaters for the last decade
A down the line kick often starts with a forward identifying and leading into a bit of space. When the ball is floated to him he gets there too early, ends up trapped under it and the defenders have time to flood in.
When it gets there fast he’s a good chance to arrive at the same time as the ball and catch the defenders out of position.
It’s disco’s biggest failure as a recruiter, not recognising the importance of elite kicking in the modern game. Indeed, I don’t think he knew what elite kicking looked like, nor understood how damaging bad kicking is to your own team.

I reckon it’s more of a Scott Hodges - Mark Merenda style, with the awareness of Adam Switala for good measure.
You can still put a nothing down the line kick to your team mates advantage. It’s really only a metre either way a lot of the time.

Best kicks actually kick to where they want someone to go before the lead……not many capable of this. Just dont have the poise or vision. Reid is actually quite good at it……
