This. It ■■■■■ me to tears that we have a good backman, then we decide to move him to the midfield, and they are decidedly average there. Meanwhile you have players who are natural midfielders (Sharp, Johnson), but we play them back and forward.
Didn’t get a lot of ball in hand but think did a lot of unrewarded running and work last night. Played the entire first quarter on the field and had most distance covered for either team 4.6km in the first quarter alone. If you go back and watch Durham’s first goal hes actually out the back in space behind Durham (which Durham converted anyway), hes also out the back for Perkins when he set up Sharp’s first goal (sharp 100% the better and correct option) and lastly Fiorini’s miss he starts the handball chain at d50 and you can see him stream through the middle of the ground to be an option and ends up inboard when Fiorini sprays the shot across the face (again having the shot probably the right option but the workrate to sprint 100m to try and be an option on display). All this while essentially blanketing Ginni in the first quarter who i dont think had any touches inside 50 in that quarter outside of a free kick from 55m out.
Think he is showing the increased running capacity from having a full preseason that he is getting up the ground to be link up options whether he is used or not and still getting back and being accountable defensively where I don’t think he got torched 1 on 1 by a direct opponent all night.
Just keep getting games into him and Nguyen as well as the 1st year draftees and the added development for the team will come!
