#41 Saad El-Hawli - thru 2026

Any update on the injury?

It’s not, it can be explained very easily. Mid season we pick guys purely on exposed football form.

In the draft we weigh potential much more heavily than we should and under value demonstrated football ability.

Well, if you ignore that Tsatas has been dominating VFL and only played as a sub at AFL when comparing output, then yes this silly comparison makes sense.

If we applied our msd recruitment philosophy to all drafts the last 20 would look very different. You wouldn’t have examples like strineberg over Parker etc

I know his kicking is really crap but Tsatas has actually been dominating in the Vfl.

He has lots of workable traits to become a very good afl kidfielder- providing he can improve his kicking, which im worried he cant.

He’s been getting a lot of ball at VFL level. But he isnt damaging, at all

No you’d have a host of players who won their U18 team and league best and fairests and then did nothing.

Doubt we’ll hear anything till tomorrow. Fingers crossed it’s not that bad but given he plays for us he might need his ankle to be amputated!

He was walking around fine after the game, no ice, crutches or anything. Don’t think there is much to be concerned about

By foot he isnt, but its the way he wins the ball in the vfl that I like.
He gets the ball inside packs and extracts it or brings it out himself.

He just needs to fix his kicking. Fingers crossed for us.

Huh so potting Tsatas in his own thread isn’t enough now lol

Surely Saady could come in and offer more than Menz forward or Kelly on a wing? Must have a ping (surely the Ankle is good to go with a rest - please some injury luck FFS) with him against the Eagles, can’t ask for an easier introduction to AFL than them away from home

If you took that philosophy to an extreme perhaps. I’m not saying upside wouldn’t be a factor at all. And obviously there are other significant KPIs, like athletic profile, size etc. All I’m saying is we undervalue demonstrated football ability in favor of upside (especially in the second round) and I didn’t think it’s the right approach.

He was excellent, lots to love and I would love to see him come in against the Eagles (if ankle ok).

However, we need to keep in mind that this game was against the bottom of the table FarkCarlton. There is no guarantee he replicates the same level against AFL level teams. Let’s be careful not to overhype him too much.

give the people what they want, BRING

Its the truth

So you’re back to using the same basis we and every club uses. With your only evidence that we don’t a player picked 15 odd years ago who every club, including Sydney initially passed.

I mean, on your basis, Tsatas was a no brainer. He was dominating U18 getting it 30-40 times a game despite a restricted preseason and injuries. So, what are you complaining about?

I’m not going to rehash misses over the last 20 years of recruiting. I don’t think suggesting we’ve recruited poorly is especially controversial though and to me, we do seem to overvalue upside, leadership and good family (at least publicly).

Tsatas was not an unreasonable pick, though I wouldn’t have picked him because of the glaring kicking issue. I liked McKenzie because he could kick the eyes out of it. Liked ginbey for his toughness. Others liked Humphrey. I don’t think there was really a stand out guy at 5 tbh

His Bullants performances were also strong however so it’s not a last two weeks thing. He has been strong all year in the VFL.

Had 33 disp and 2 goals v Swans VFL just prior to us picking him up

Yeah, it’s like Hunter. People say he only had one good VFL game without considering his WAFL form that season. El-Hawli has had an excellent VFL season.
