#41 Saad El-Hawli - thru 2026

ease up snowflake, lav 20 game season incoming and YOU. WILL. LIKE. IT.

I’ve hit an age whereby I’m transitioning into a grumpy old c#&$.

Highly doubt I ā€œwill like itā€.

what the F-K

Saad could line up in each third of the ground, HB, wing and HF, even small forward at a stretch.

Even if he is only used as depth he will still get plenty of games considering everyone else for those positions hasn’t proven they can plan a full season.

We got El Hawli to replace D’Ambrosio who we forgot to give a game to. Every team needs a really good consistent player that it forgets to give games to. Saad is our new one of those. Simples.

He being as versatile as he is, but not yet an established feature, I envisage him as the perfect sub candidate

He will go to Hawthorn or Carlton at years end

Would think he could play any of rebounding hbf, wing or small forward.

So battling with:

  1. Shiel, Roberts and Prior for 2 spots
  2. Martin and Roberts (and hopefully not Cox and Jones too lol) for 1 spot
  3. Martin, Gresham, Guelfi, Davey, Menzies, Perkins, an extra resting mid, or even an extra kpf cos BS for 2-3 spots.

There’s a lot of possibilities for him. Shiel off hb takes 1 potential spot away. How we use Martin will impact him the most.

He’ll be played as a sub and in and out of the side giving him no continuity, then fall out of favour with brad, pretty much the same treatment as Massimo in 23 and hind in 24.

He’s the best zero games played player we have had for years.

WING

Exactly !!

Did anyone see how he went in the vfl game ?

Geelong had the electric fences up and Geelong rednecks patrolling so no one was able to see it

So pretty normal sort of Geelong crew then

I get that it’s still early days but I don’t quite understand what has happened with this guy?

How do you go from absolutely dominating at VFL level last year and looking a class above, to a year later not standing out much at all? What did he have, 30 touches and 4 goals in his first or second match? And then even in the last couple of games (of 2024) after coming back from that injury he looked good.

In theory, you’re supposed to get BETTER after becoming a full time footballer, yet somehow I think with us, at this club, players get worse the longer they are in our environment.

Hit the nail on the head; only thing I can think is that we give these players so much instruction that it confuses them, thus making them less instinctive footballers.

Think his role has changed. Doing lots more wind sprints and UNREWARDED RUNNING on a wing.

Would much prefer him behind the ball in Shiel’s role.

Essington happened to him.
Simples.
